We recently sat down with Emily Conklin, Program Manager at Sailors for the Sea powered by Oceana, to talk about how the sailing community is leading the charge in ocean conservation.
Based in Newport, RI, this "small but mighty" team of three works globally to educate and activate boaters to protect our blue playground. Here are the highlights from our chat:
• Clean Regattas Program: Last year alone, they supported over 600 events worldwide—from youth dinghy races to offshore events like Kiel Week.
• The Platinum Standard: Events can earn certification (from Participant to Platinum) by adopting 20 best practices across themes like eliminating single-use items and climate awareness.
• Youth Leading the Way: Younger sailors are often the most enthusiastic advocates, naturally embracing habits like using refillable water bottles and participating in marine debris cleanups.
• Big Wins: Beyond the docks, their community’s voice has helped push for major changes, including phasing out plastic shipping pillows at Amazon and passing "skip the stuff" laws for takeout.

We keep this page for our YouTube channel, our sailing life, and all the usual chaos that comes with it. (Other than the amazing artwork our daughter Roxie does when she is well enough to)
But today, we’re making an exception.......
We are back in the UK and to support our daughter, Roxanne, after devastating news yesterday. She has been through years of serious health problems, repeated surgeries, pain, infection, and being passed from pillar to post. She has now finally seen a private specialist who has confirmed that she needs urgent surgery.
Although she has now been added to an NHS waiting list, the timescale she has been given is far too long for her situation. She needs help much sooner than that.
We know how frightening and frustrating that feels. We went through our own version of it when I needed a heart valve replacement and had to seek private treatment abroad because waiting was simply too dangerous.
Roxanne is now trying to raise £8,000 for the surgery she urgently needs. This won’t solve everything overnight, but it will be the first proper step towards recovery and towards getting her life back. Most importantly, it will give her a chance to be more present for her young son, who needs his mum.
We know that many people are under pressure financially, and we completely understand that not everyone can donate. But even sharing her post could make a real difference.
So today, as parents, we’re asking our followers to please read Roxanne’s story and, if you can, share it.
