SAILING fever will take hold on Magnetic Island next week as thousands flock to the annual race week.
It will mark the 10th anniversary SeaLink Magnetic Island Race Week and organisers say they are expecting their biggest crowd yet.
Event co-ordinator Jodie Kennedy said boats were coming from all over Australia for the event, which boasts Magnetic Island’s familiar laid-back atmosphere.
“We’ve got 72 boats registered and last year we only had 63,” she said.
“I love this event because the moment you get off the boat, even though it’s a busy event, it’s just that great feeling because it’s on the island.”
The week is set to include signature events like the beer can regatta, the Magnetic Island Treasure Quest and the already sold-out Ladies’ Long Lunch. Ms Kennedy said based on last year, when 6000 people attended the various days of the event, the race week would inject more than $700,000 into the local economy.
“The organising committee are extremely proud that it’s still going strong after 10 years,” she said.
“Most of Magnetic gets involved somehow.”
Magnetic Island Race Week will start next Thursday and run until September 6.
