Single handed that is. This was the first time I've ever sailed by myself. Got home early enough and the wind was blowing in the "perfect" direction for some...

so I just got back at a wind direction
there is now where it was promised to be
supposed to be coming out of the
Northeast it's coming out of the
southeast and that'll make sailing
single hand it a little bit difficult
but even with that challenge there it's
not often that I have a chance to do
this so I'm gonna try it anyway those
cats over there
they've been eyeing me for quite a while
but will not let me pet them so if you
have any tips on how to get that love
and affection let me know so this is the
problem that I'm talking about with
single-handed docking as soon as I take
that line off boat the bow of the boat
at least swings into the neighbors there
which is not optimal for what I'm trying
to do so the new plan after thinking
about it and looking at the wind
forecast is a to go get food and try
again in about an hour but before I
leave food I'm going to go ahead and
pull the cover
[Music]
all right so I showed you guys how how
the sale cover comes off let's see what
needs to be done down below before we
take a trip and I'm clog the
dehumidifier a little water in there
jump back down the drain
okay that is stowed sort of I'm gonna
move stuff towards the center of my
table move all the art and Catholic
imagery somewhere where will not fly
across the cabin and as it has done in
the past put the glass bottles in the
sink the Brita is down the soap bottle
should probably go in the sink as well
here I'm gonna push back plastic we're
over there I'm sorry about the
single-use already got the bedroom ready
so we're not even gonna look at that but
the engine room here to open up the
seacock for the engine
and I'm going to leave the air
conditioner open battery charger says
that we're charged up I'm making sure
nothing is in front of the rudder cable
here nothing back there only electrical
panel I'm going to shut off the AC
circuits and turn on my navigation that
uh that beeping is the depth sounder
everything in the front cabin is pretty
stable where it is so I don't need to
rearrange that but I do put the trash
can right here I have the best luck with
it right between those doors it doesn't
have a lot of room to move I've got my
Garmin GPS it's a 4 21s quite an old
bottle but still works and love it I'm
going to attach the data cable to that
I'm gonna put the cushions up where they
actually would go on the seats good book
and cockpit right there I do say so
myself
next up is the shore power it's always
safest to start from the dock box and if
you
think about it really should be the only
way you do this now there's no chance of
electrocution when I pull out the other
side just um
do these I like to check them every time
I pull them to make sure that uh they're
not melting this one feels a little bit
warm but it's not good
Plus now that they're unplugged they can
just go onto the dock over here nice and
gently nice and gentle
so the main halyard is normally routed
to this wench right here but today and
try routing it all the way back to that
Jade wench because I'm not gonna be
using my jib if I can like to do all
this looks like it is just long enough
to reach so got that line going from the
front the boat to the back engine
running right now I'm gonna practice
getting on and off the dock a few times
before I actually try getting out of it
anywhere if I had a GoPro mount or
something I'd be able to film myself
doing that but I think today I'm just
gonna focus on sailing it was actually a
lot easier than I thought it would be
getting out of there I'm gonna swing the
boat around make a loop around the dock
here and then come back at it like I
would currently there's hardly any wind
so this is perfect for practicing
a wise a sailing instructor once told me
that you want to go as fast as you're
willing to hit something when you're
docking and that is about how fast I'm
going right now
one point six knots a little bit
catawampus right now but uh I'll take it
considering that's the first time I've
ever done that by myself
probably sail fenders are up the wind is
increasing a little bit but that might
just be a little puff going to nuts
now as I exit the marina hopefully
coming back here in a little bit
[Music]
it's not really showing up on camera as
well as a as it ought to but it's really
gorgeous out here
there are rainstorms all around me the
blue skies heading my way and
yeah if you didn't catch that that was
supposed to be metaphorical and deep but
I'll let you interpret that how you want
you one big complaint I had about the
cockpit is the autopilot it's way down
there and it's kind of inconvenient to
read so I'm gonna try it yeah see what I
can do
alright so the autopilot is keeping us
on course it looks like I'm gonna try to
raise the main now get into the wind
okay
well got the autopilot off cut the sail
raise engine turned off I'm sailing
probably just do a couple laps and then
I head back in I'm gonna have to get the
jib out because the wind is way too
light for just the mainsail
I'll never get across the bay here I'm
not only about a two mile trek I'm gonna
bring out the jib on the Left got the
furling line kind of paid out here so
that doesn't go in the water
and winched up on the left but I just
wanted to take a moment to share how
balanced I am right now I've got
terrible trim on I mean but I'm not even
on the at the helm right now and track
it along quite nicely had a good heading
about two knots right now with the
mainsail alone I'm gonna pull out the
jib and we'll see how fast I'm going
so with the Jim out
got about four knots so that doubles our
speed I'm gonna try to work on trimming
it a little bit just noticed on the name
sheet it's twisted and it's twisted
about 180 because when I put that
brand-new main sheet on I but
nevertheless we're still going about
four knots and targeting me I arranged
marker over there tack over and head
back probably so sailing single-handed
is something that you'll have to learn
if you want to sail around the world but
right now I'm kind of just enjoying the
afternoons after work sailing it's a lot
of fun so try not the autopilot on a
kind of a clothes for each year to see
how how well it can do and so far it's
still pretty well I almost got to find
knots right there works is a huge relief
for me means I can do this a lot more
often
I don't even have to worry about the
help tracking along I hate doing
narrations on these but the audio on
this segment was pretty bad
basically I'm talking about tacking
steps
[Music]
[Music]
wasn't the cleanest tack I've ever done
especially when the camera fell over but
pushing six knots here if I can get the
trim just right there it is it's a
pretty good speed for the light air we
have
[Music]
the first time in a long time that I've
been able to sail without that stupid
shackle falling in the water
[Music]
so I hang a little bit philosophical
here I know that I could actually call
this single hand sailing because not
really doing it by myself clearly God is
in the wind and all that as elegant as I
can put it really where am i more
theological inclined friends you kind of
put it to me that way a beauty of
sailing is that you're really putting
your whole whole being into God's hands
I'm not really in control of any of this
it's all dependent on the wind the waves
are tied if you're a monotheistic
theological kind of person and then
you'll kind of get what I'm talking
about if not then you should check it
out you might be wondering why I'm
wearing a brace on my knee because I had
a knee surgery awhile ago kind of ruined
my whole summer really I don't I don't
recommend it but uh feels a lot better
and don't tell my surgeon that I'm out
here already because I'm not supposed to
be sailing for another few weeks except
once I get back towards the marina is to
get the engine back up and running and
drop the mainsail cuz docking with
mainsail up is not something that I have
ever wanted to do ever and of course as
I head in it begins to sprinkle a little
bit hopefully I don't see any storms
around me so it shouldn't get any worse
a little bit more about the autopilot
this one's a wheel mounted autopilot
system
typically for a boat as big as
anticipation is you would not want to
use something this small I would
definitely like to upgrade to a to a
system that is mounted directly to the
rudder like one of those nice hydraulic
ones but this is a what came with the
boat
[Music]
this is the moment I've been waiting for
and dreading docking single-handed for
real this time
not just to practice although it's
identical to practice still not looking
forward to it allegedly that boat there
is for sale get it for sale
ha well made it back okay not really any
issues getting back into the slip but
now that I'm back got put away probably
gonna go up to the clubhouse and get
fish tacos and then I go to bed early
and
[Music]
