Will she ever run again??? I've been unable to run it lately because of a starter problem. Also in this episode, replacing the sea-strainer from my raw water...

all right well I've got to to dues on my
to-do list today the first one is going
to be replacing the ICI strainer for the
raw water pump and reason that I need to
do this today is because it is not
working and it is hot it is the middle
of July we cannot live like this so that
could be done and the second thing which
I'm probably going to put in a separate
video and use to change out the starter
motor engine this bad boy is pretty
expensive but one online boat
so I can't really start the food
[Music]
so because of the awkward positioning of
all this
to unmount everything I have to take off
the electric water motor pump the raw
water basically take that off and take
off the hose over there and then the
entire thing can come off and I'll have
to change out the strainer up here on
deck and then we will be able to get air

[Applause]
[Music]
all right I really don't recommend doing
what I'm about to do but I want to check
that this motor is actually working so
I'm going to
[Music]
[Music]
cool well it is running part of the
problem I'm having those that it's
getting incredibly hot and there's not
really a way to check if the cooling
system is free this is a water-cooled
motor it takes a little bit of the
output water and pushes it through the
actual engine compartment there while I
have the motor cooling off I want to
take a look at the hardware here this is
the old sea strainer it is caked in
black crud a new one looks a lot better
one cool difference is that croco looks
like at some point went from these brass
weights to plastic blades plastic ones
are probably a lot cheaper to
manufacture and replace which is good
this one was actually leaking a little
bit so I would have needed to replace
this anyway
but now I will magically put new brass
fittings on here and replace that we'll
go from there
I've got a teflon tape here to put on
the threads of this brass bit it is
important that you go with the thread on
this so the threads are actually going
that way
which means that I need to wrap it that
direction the reason you do that is
otherwise it's gonna kind of back itself
off as you go long and I just did that
wrong so let me correct it before I go
any further here
started
[Music]
perfect
so I'm going to put this one in the
outlet
and grab a pipe wrench put a pipe wrench
on it probably work so once more good
orient myself sign with the threads
[Music]
[Music]
perfect
how do the other side okay I got to put
back together for now sorta
I left the outlets and unhooked because
next I'm going to open up the
through-hole and flush water through it
to make sure that the air kind of gets
pushed out then I'll come back up and
reattach the hose right there and
hopefully everything will hold there it
goes I've got water it's pretty touch
that real quick cool I'll throw some
clamps on it and we'll try running it
and see what happens
go outside and check what the flow was
like okay well now that the strainer is
straining let it run for a few hours and
see if that fixes the issue of the motor
overheating if not then what we'll have
to do is replace the entire motor which
those are about four hundred dollars I
really don't want to have to do that
well if you never seen the inside of one
of these before
[Music]
[Music]
yep that'd do it
that looks like it is packed full of
grass clippings and there are a lot of
alive things as well so I probably
didn't actually need to fully replace it
but I'm glad I am because it looks like
yeah I wasn't going to touch that and
I'd rather spend the almost $200 on
replacement but hopefully that won't
happen again
[Music]
[Music]
you gotta be kidding me
[Music]
so that means I just spent $140 on the
new starter for nothing
[Music]
so I want to tell you show you how to
replace the starter on that run I guess
it's working so we're good
since I'm not actually gonna pull this
out I can just show you where it is the
starter on a diesel engine it's a little
bit bigger and different than the
starter you'd find under car that is
because the diesel engine basically
starts by spinning up and can't start it
with a nice little spark plugs but mine
is right here this is the one that I
installed last year actually the second
time I've done it the problem with these
guys is that because my engine is sold
she's a 1975 engine so they don't make
the parts for it anymore this is a
retrofit kind of part and the one that I
bought is basically an even newer model
of that one my dad was probably one of
the easier parts to take on and off of
the engine it has a three little
mounting bolts and then I have to unplug
it and pull it out a new one in
but yeah that is where that is so maybe
in the future I'll show myself actually
replacing it but not today
since I'm not actually gonna be
installing this one I might as well show
you how it works
basic mechanism we've got going on here
is a solenoid which will connect the
circuit it's not actually doing anything
mechanically it's more there to complete
the circuit and provide the pathway 770
apps that this thing is gonna pull to us
meant up so the positive end goes here
the negative end somewhere on the motor
when those two connect to you start
spinning the motor itself right here
will turn this little ping in here in
this pinion gear when it starts to turn
will shoot out and and inside the engine
there's a flywheel with the same gear
pattern on it that will engage and start
spinning the engine up but now that I
have it and I think I'll just keep it
round parts it doesn't have a good
solenoid on it and you know that if
anything is gonna burn out first it's
gonna be that solenoid so
it's good to have spares one other thing
if you're trying to shop around for your
replacement there's tons of resources
online you just kind of look up the the
view sheets and find something that is
similar to what you're trying to replace
the the most important part the starter
is going to be heating gear and the
network and horsepower that this thing
could put out if you can get those
pretty close especially the gear then
you should be blind also the bolt
pattern that this bolts on to the engine
is also important so you'll want to make
sure that is correct or at least
adjustable in some regard yeah most
marine engines have good resources
though so take the time to find
