Made a big screw-up on port light install and now having to redo them. Lessons learned, stronger adhesives are not always better, expired adhesives are never...

so the sexy port lights STD started to
detach and actually these ones are
completely now detached thank you to a
boning knife and a sharp chisel so
really the problem is this 3m urethane I
used a tube of it that it expired okay
four years ago dumb idea and yeah I'm
paying for that now anyway yeah so this
this product eighty six oh nine I don't
think it's the right way to go even even
the window ports that we're puttin with
the the new tube it's okay but it's not
great not great adhesion so I'm I'm
gonna gonna go a different route anyway
these ones are out the other side the
other side is still in these ones really
still are reasonably well attached
nonetheless I'm going to pull them out
and do them a little better so here's
the new process the inside of the port
lights taped off and it's been sanded
around the edge where the contact will
be six six flex to 95 UV that is a
little softer just as flexible as the 3m
product but softer and I think more
compatible with the the acrylic also
with that is a Sikka 209 n primer so
that primer goes on the the plastic
surface
all our acrylic plastic surface all the
way around the edge sits for a couple
hours and then bond the window much in
the same way I'm gonna do a little
better job of really pressing the window
in and getting a good pressure fit to
activate the high bond tape I found it
some areas I missed when I was pulling
the windows out it was clear so I'll
I'll do a little better job of pushing
pushing them in making sure that tape is
fully adhered anyway it's kind of a day
wasted and a couple hundred dollars
worth of materials but lesson learned
well cut the windows all taped up again
ready to give this another go pretty
much same approach other and I'm gonna
make sure I really really push those
windows down really well make sure that
bond is really really well sealed using
the different adhesive too and the
primers I've been put on the air we are
with the plexi curly and that's jewel 9
seconds can put around the edges so I'm
gonna peel the tape off put down a bead
of of the sealant and start putting them
on one at a time it's pretty cool
just pull the tape off and ready to put
this on
I did add tape on the edge of the plexi
this time just make it easier to clean
up because you can't touch this stuff
with any kind of solvent it just cracks
it there we go
ready to place the a'carly can place
there I got the port lights back in
feeling better this time about how
they're sealed up and adhering so
hopefully that's uh that's going to work
anyway haven't haven't been able to put
much up on video lately but I've been
getting a fair bit done on the boat
been out a couple of times a couple
times sailing a couple times moldering
spent a couple nights on it
so that's alright say I don't know I I
just found that the never ending list
the projects was was getting to be a bit
a bit much and just just kind of ran out
of energy on some of it up in the boat
here things are kind of a mess Solar is
working out pretty well but I've only
got about 140 hundred fifty Watts now
I'm gonna probably look at a couple of
flexible panels too so get up somewhere
around 250 watts or so and I think
that'll be that'll be plenty to keep
everything going that I have in the boat
well that's pretty much it for what I've
got for video that's kind of ready to go
and then I've edited down it's been busy
I've been trying to sell off some of the
farm stuff have a cruising course going
on as well so picking up a little bit
more a little bit more Theory gaining a
little more confidence out in the boat
what all else you know just a ton of
stuff going on but anyways got one more
weekend of the cruisin course and then
probably a weekend I'll try to get out
and actually get on the boat for a
weekend maybe shoot some footage of that
hopefully get a little bit from the
course - if I can I'm going to try to
step up the video quality a bit I know
that's a little lacking I got some some
new camera stuff on order so we'll see
how that goes
well a few more projects to do - I gotta
clean up all the wiring have the
autopilot that the auto helm that I want
to hook up to the chart plotter so
there's a little bit to work work out
with that to figure out that NEMA Nemea
interface from 183 to see talked ng or
the Raymarine proprietary protocol so
I've got a convertor picked up I just
have to have to work out hooking that up
a few more little things in the boat to
do just finish off some of the
woodworking and stuff anyway get at it
try to get it the rest of the cleaned up
in the next couple weeks and then it'll
be a more sailing well I do have one
trip - that I've been provisioning for
and everything that's kind of
interesting it's a canoe trip up from
the heart occur near Arctic so that's
been quite a quite a job to get ready
for yeah all the food and everything is
it's got to be prepared a month ahead of
time and shipped up by ground and then
fly up and fly in for this trip so
hopefully I'll get some footage of that
as well it should be interesting I mean
these these canoe trips up there are
like a two-week passage out on the ocean
except here you're going through the
forest well actually there's no poorest
up there it's the Barrens but there's no
stores there's no ports there's no
there's nothing
it's just wilderness so fishing should
be amazing
camping should be amazing what mazing
whitewater should be a really great trip
anyway it's pretty much in the center of
the Northwest Territories and
therefore 2 plus weeks so can't wait
really really stoked for that anyway
that's it for tonight
more to come I'll try to get the videos
coming up a little quicker and like I
said and try to get get the quality a
little better as well
