In Episode 6, me and my brother start sailing school to get the maritime license. A requirement to register boat under Swiss law. Meanwhile Galopin awaits its new sailors, so we go down to the south of France for a few days to clear out the boat and spend a few nights on board. It's a good start, and we learn things on a real vessel that compliments what we are learning in class.

0:15
so it's become our Thursday evening
0:19
special dinner come here and have
0:22
awesome burgers before we go and learn
0:26
how to sell our first night was mostly
0:34
informative the information being in a
0:36
thick binder Atlantic channel Almanac
0:39
and the questions to be passed in the
0:42
exam as well as chart reading
0:45
instruments not the ones needing any
0:47
electricity obviously it all looked a
0:51
bit daunting to me the others will have
0:54
to speak for themselves
0:57
there's a lot of importance put on math
0:59
calculations and I was never great at
1:02
math but I have a pretty good sense of
1:04
direction which will hopefully help to
1:10
make things a little more challenging
1:12
the course was in French
1:14
I mean marine language is rooted in
1:17
English and I really wished we were
1:19
talking to Queenstown right now
1:26
thursdaya class is over it's all in
1:29
French
1:31
the real pain in the ass to deal with it
1:35
it can be very interesting very complete
1:39
everything looks mathematical first day
1:41
because I give you a main 1864 Aleutian
1:44
permit which I get some latest whisk and
1:47
exhaling the mathematical but that part
1:49
of radius in the paddle and I find that
1:54
my foot is moving about one and a
1:57
quarter meters per second 14 weeks of
2:00
this until the transmission now
2:10
understand I'm not knocking mathematics
2:13
just that learning sailing in a
2:15
classroom is like learning the physics
2:17
of riding a bike in order to ride a bike
2:20
and I'm more visually oriented
2:25
so I did a lot better at this charting
2:27
exercise a couple of days later you
2:32
drove to Gallup on the real thing no
2:35
theory the first thing we did was go
3:08
through everything make our beds and
3:10
make it just comfortable so we've just
3:14
had a really nice dinner at Casino
3:17
valiant here and look at but they're
3:21
forcing us to watch the Lyon and
3:24
Marseille soccer game so we're forced to
3:27
watch this we're just waiting for our
3:29
dessert and they're sick and oh Jesus
3:33
they're so hungry I could almost eat the
3:37
whole thing over again
3:38
yeah but second time here we are in the
3:41
boat in the gutter pond we just had
3:43
dinner at the casino about yeah it was
3:50
not bad you know no so we're just we
3:52
brought some takeaway pizza which they
3:55
won didn't want to give us but they did
3:56
give it to us
4:01
and we're gonna watch here we go let's
4:16
go Brady Brady yeah yeah England
4:28
Patriots against the Broncos and we're
4:31
hoping the New England Patriots gonna
4:33
win unless that he wanted the Broncos to
4:37
he was born in Boulder it was almost as
4:39
if we were at the stadium it was so cold
4:43
in the cabin we could actually see our
4:45
breaths well as they say in Boston it
4:48
was colder than a witch's tit
4:50
we slept well and woke up to undergo
4:53
more projects we're replacing the 2013
4:56
with 2020 so and we're gonna replace
5:02
this so that's what we're gonna do cross
5:06
our fingers we have some heat and some
5:09
gas tonight in the stove so we can make
5:12
some steaks and some breakfast tomorrow
5:14
and dry it up a little bit cuz it's
5:16
really cold and you in here as you can
5:18
see just kind of a fog and humid and
5:23
apparently it's coming from the
5:25
Mediterranean which is over there twisty
5:34
knife blades awesome well we're gonna
5:39
keep these things tighten the tube these
5:45
are pretty handy rather than the screw
5:46
things this we need to get rid of this T
5:50
done now I just need to get the the tube
5:55
that goes inside to the stove we need to
5:57
get it out it's kind of snuck in here
6:04
so this tube has been replaced this is
6:07
latched in and then we're gonna put in
6:08
the hinge door until now you will see
6:12
the functionality of project number one
6:17
what all things so important for it to
6:22
work that is beautiful that is beautiful
6:29
that means hot coffee tomorrow and hot
6:32
food today and warmth in this little
6:40
that could be relatively problem but we
6:49
have our emergency blanket in here well
6:54
I think we we fixed our first project so
6:59
we replace the tubes were supposed to be
7:02
replaced in 2014 and now they're good
7:05
until 2020 also replaced and affect the
7:12
coupled gas cans so now we only have one
7:16
gas can which is to the norm to the
7:18
original specs of this boat I'm pretty
7:23
pleased with myself that's right pretty
7:25
damn pleased all right okay good my
7:28
first project gas man we're celebrating
7:34
with some Four Roses bourbon coca-cola
7:39
niebaum glass know if you can see it so
7:44
I need Brad quick mo
7:51
celery salad I love the show
8:00
gender so my mouth is like literally
8:04
watering like salivating can't avoid
8:10
that one more desirable and whatever so
8:16
we got a bunch of bunch of cheeses to
8:18
try so we're still waiting for the
8:19
batteries to charge up there only 19%
8:22
charged it up take a while as you can
8:29
see 28 hours left only 19% and we've got
8:35
no lighting in here so we've kind of
8:38
making do
8:50
I'm just off to go evacuate some of the
8:56
last night's celebration festivities
8:58
cheese fest so I'm all equipped to go to
9:03
the bathrooms of the marina here with
9:10
the book owners shocked and South my
9:14
glasses one can read the book
9:20
Hey
9:24
cigarette that helps the whole
9:28
digestive system kind of acts as a
9:32
laxative sorry um
9:33
so I'm going on going out by the way I'm
9:36
learning a San Francisco 49ers fan I'm
9:39
not a San Francisco 49ers fan I like
9:43
them but I just happen to have this hat
9:46
and it's cold so you know chilly
9:49
so I wear at least it's not a Jets fan
9:52
or something like that I'll show you
9:57
what the bathroom facilities facilities
9:58
look like all right let's go that's
10:07
where we slept for the past couple
10:08
nights oh it was really nice Sun fist 40
10:13
we saw a bellows type bulb over there
10:17
the amount super Marimo solar facilities
10:23
here big barbecue
10:46
these are the facilities on the extreme
10:52
end of the marina much nicer but a bit
10:57
further too long - it's been four days
11:04
I've taken a shower
11:06
I feel like Ernest Shackleton and his
11:12
adventures in Antarctica those guys
11:15
hadn't showered for several months and
11:20
I've been living on seal and albatross
11:27
and penguins it's pretty similar to to
11:31
us having a chart for four days and
11:35
mostly eating stuff we bought at the
11:37
store any cooked in our own in our
11:42
little getup on a sailing vessel maybe
11:45
it's not quite the same but you know two
11:49
sailors like so I don't know how they
11:53
went to the bathroom but I'm gonna go in
11:55
here
11:56
very nice facilities and I'm gonna read
12:00
more of Ernest Shackleton's adventures
12:17
this behind me is a amount super Marimo
12:20
it's the kind of boat that the Della's
12:22
cruise is sailing on the French boat and
12:26
it looks like there's a pretty nice one
12:27
here so just kind of caught my eye I've
12:33
got a great boat and now we can see
12:35
exactly what it looks like
12:37
you know life because it's right in
12:39
front of my feet and right in front of
12:41
my face and it's live instead of on the
12:43
YouTube screen from dedos so now I'm
12:47
just going to get a couple hinges for
12:50
this little gas Locker that we have that
12:54
holds our propane gas and I'm going to
12:56
the store they're nearby
12:58
I guess iaj diffusion and they have also
13:01
done marine that's way too
13:04
expensive but I need to buy that's made
13:07
of stainless steel or whatever so here
13:10
we go
14:12
well very nice steffie's project today
14:19
to screw the number plate back on my
14:29
beautiful handiwork very happy stainless
14:36
steel so mr. Christian you can see that
14:41
thing is now perfectly set there's no
14:47
more coupling so that's all good and I
14:52
just so project number one done awesome
15:17
cool case on my friend long giving me
15:20
it's already filled up pretty well need
15:28
protector so we had David come by local
15:33
guide from Perpignan they have a wicked
15:36
cool French accent when you speak like a
15:39
Southern drawl when I picture that that
15:42
trooper young people anyways he went
15:45
through a bunch of stuff that we needed
15:46
to have looked at number one with the
15:48
battery situation a bad reason dad dead
15:51
plus more than dead couldn't charge and
15:54
apparently that could have been
15:56
an issue so he's coming in tomorrow with
16:01
a couple new batteries and it cost us
16:03
about 270 euro each plus for him to
16:09
install them and do some metal checking
16:11
on the electrics not kind of projects
16:14
that I want to undertake right now
16:15
because I'm not confident enough to do
16:19
those kind of things and I'd rather then
16:21
have them done correctly and then can't
16:25
watch him how to do it so right now I'm
16:28
clearing out stuff and I've cleared a
16:30
bunch of stuff already in the past three
16:31
days I've made some room and all the
16:33
storage I found a bunch of stuff I found
16:36
lately some who know fishing rap one
16:40
bunch of fishing water so I'm gonna go
16:43
through that they're just everything so
16:44
much is hidden in these trunks tons of
16:49
life jackets there's harnesses there are
16:51
tools I found a carburetor for the
16:55
two-stroke a bunch of filters and other
16:58
stuff amines a bunch of candles here
17:01
there's a bunch of used up flares anyway
17:08
so besides making some great meals and
17:11
really enjoying our life here as
17:13
liveaboards for the past few couple days
17:15
or three or four days we have been
17:17
making progress to make this little bowl
17:20
but now it's got to be navigable so
17:22
that's the most important thing
17:24
so there's problem with the hot water
17:27
heater that we may get replaced there's
17:30
some water problem because the pump has
17:32
been going on and off so they're gonna
17:33
come and replace some of the tubing
17:35
again stuff that I try to do but I'd
17:39
rather have some value do it really well
17:40
you don't you pick it up pump you know
17:42
we all know what that will ship for
17:47
passage I our 80 municipal so I have to
17:52
be back soon but this is just all part
17:55
of my winded way
18:13
you
