welcome back to cactus alien please
subscribe to our channel to keep up to
date with our ventures and of course if
you liked the video give it a thumbs up
you last joined us in Dartmouth and this
is where we hid from the worst of the
weather and this seems to be a
reoccurring theme this week
unfortunately we have to deal with
whatever we've dealt with and with the
rain lashing down we opted for a few
more nights and darkness I didn't want
to risk putting the crew op sailing by
taking a man miss bull rain and the West
View illness Thomas is quite a nice
place especially if you've got a dinghy
though but this will help you cross the
river because the ferry can become quite
expensive if he didn't keep crossing and
also is great for exploring at further
up the river if you're so inclined
we did see a boat sat on a concrete ramp
while he was out in town and we didn't
think too much of it at the time but
upon returning the tide had come in and
it actually sank due to the angle that
it was tied up a boat was even tired on
top of it we felt a bit bad for the
owner and collected a few floating
things around before sticking hatches
back on the boat we later found out was
okay in the end and it did dry out
eventually the weather was really
started to impact our schedule with a
week already drifting by a less than
favorable forecast was on the horizon
followed by more foresake gales and rain
are you doing Kenneth I'm just popped in
dinner a firm put a man some tacos maybe
you're cooking tacos yeah what goes in
them
how'd you make that goes Kenny wanted to
use corn flour yeah
75% of them yeah and then some sunflower
oil more why is he looking at down there
nothing what is it all on groan hey look
the forecast for tomorrow wasn't great
it was a force 5 to 7 with 8 at times
but on many do the forecast sites it was
giving it out as a force 67 at worse so
he decided actually we should challenge
ourselves and go ahead with this one so
we decided to we'd actually head towards
liver but it did actually mean that was
gonna be beaten into it the reason we
wanted to do this is because there was
gonna be even more gales coming along in
it and the days to come
and we thought actually we haven't
really made what the progress west so
the more progress we could make west and
the better that would be for us coming
after Dartmouth we saw some dolphins
which delayed getting the sails up and
this was because we was all marbling
them swimming with the boat it's often
said this can be a good omen for the
trip unfortunately I don't think that
was the case

so we've just left tapas we're heading
towards Plymouth quite windy today this
trial augggh us again so we've got two
reefs in the main and a little bit you
know route and that's only purely
because of the gusts they keep really
you know not in the boat down so yeah
we're just heading towards a start point
and to be honest we're just going to see
what it was like when we get to start
point and make a decision from there not
one of the better forecasts but we're
just trying to get out before the next
lot of storms come in oh yeah we'll
catch up with this later and see where
we are
alright so we as you know we've left
Dartmouth this morning as you might be
able to hear it's choking it down out
high so we tried in here a bit as well
as we on our passage this is why you
might see the towels in the background
as well this just partly living on a
boat it's supposed to run a dry things
so I thought I'd just share with you
basically a bit of our passage planning
and how we're going to get around this
headland here which is start point and
basically you know what we're planning
to do so basically the wind is all
coming from the West
so it's all coming from this direction
as to what we need to do is we need to
get far enough south to be able to tack
back up this way away from these
headlands and away from the over Falls
that snare there and get into Plymouth
which is up up here basically but that's
not on this job I mean it was we're just
really basically just coming down down
by start point
so if you come and have a quick look
here I'll share with you what we
basically be doing so I do like to keep
my own charts nice and nice and clean so
I don't I don't particularly do fix
positions on here unless I have to
because we use GPS and everything else
so basically what we've done is we've
left Dartmouth which is up here and what
we're doing is we wait we're roughly
around on this contour here on this lot
line here and basically what we're doing
is we're we're getting farther north
south so we can basically tack back up
in this direction because as I mentioned
the winds come in from this way so that
means the closest we can sail is here
and the nettle tech is around these
headlands and then optic limit the areas
that I want to avoid is basically this
scary's Bank and that's basically
because it's not because it's too
shallow or anything like that for us
that's basically because when you have
these shallow grounds here and you've
got wind against tide these can get a
bit rough as well so we keep away from
that probably just I mean we did nip on
the inside of this scary Bank boy here
but we keep away from that and then also
these are the over Falls around start
point I can say we got the wind coming
from this direction and we got the tide
coming around this headland here so
that's a win against tide scenario so we
can have lots of over Falls and big
waves there so the this was the
reasoning why I wanted to come far
enough south and then away from this we
did see one boat
he was motoring and he was going very
close to this shoreline to start
pointing and he looked like he was
having a really rough time of it so glad
we did come out this way all those that
said it is very rough out here and so
what we're gonna do is we didn't keep
going south a bit further and roughly
around down to about here and then we'll
make our tack up this way and that'll
take us all the way to climbeth plymouth
oh sorry and yeah we won't have to keep
tacking all the way there and that'll
keep us far enough away from the
headlands so that's roughly our passage
plan and then catch up with isn't it in
a bit when we're further round welcome

we pressed on paths outcome
where we did think about pulling in but
decided against their the ways built up
and the wind increased further which
made it difficult to film anything past
album that and looking after the crew
with copious amounts of ginger biscuits
to combat the mal de Mer with a priority
even trying to make a cup of tea was a
low on the list with the reluctance to
go down below lunch was made on deck and
consisted of dried bagels with some
hastily thrown cheese on them so we all
huddled behind the spray head and kept
out the worst of the weather while the
waves broke over the bow and washed
right over the spray hood first for us
on our boat but unfortunately we didn't
manage to capture any this cottage
that was a bit of a rough crossing so we
did film a little bits of it but to be
honest when when the waves are that bad
and you know it's they work quite bad
Richardson we were hanging on to be
honest I mean it's our first time you
know in the channel properly other place
exposed and also on this boat is off so
many larger boats but but but around
stop point the waves there can get
choppy anyway we had the tide going
against the wind so it's very very
choppy and then we was gonna check it
out and go into this album
but then we thought better not and we
carried on so yeah then we carried on
all the way to Plymouth and ghost it was
pretty rough so there's a lot of green
waves over the depth or do you know were
fairly low and decided to break so that
caused a few havoc that luckily it was
only 40 minutes away from Timnath
Havoc's
havoc yeah so we're Chuck had to go up
and and wrestle the Genoa bucking I
genuinely thought I was gonna die yeah
and obviously green water was coming
over the deck at the same time and the
boat was really pitching my fires on
and because of that then we have the
engine overheating as well basically
because it was healing over so far and
there was pitching around and everything
else I think they can get into the sale
drive coffee because later on we put the
sails away not too far outside of
Plymouth we pretty much had enough by
that point and yeah moated in and it was
pointing then mostly the dog was sick
again twice it twice doctor sick and
then crapped and he crapped and then
other way another way yeah took was
second and Jeff was sick all over the
back of the boat he threw up into the
window so that was a disaster so yeah
it's all of all in all it was a very
eventful cross into Brazil lot longer
than what we thought and I suppose our
kind of teachers for beating into the
wind so that's that's the lesson we've
learned is this you know it doesn't
really matter if you're of you you know
if you're cruising because then you can
wait for the right where the windows but
we can't really do that you know we've
got finite amount of time so you know
we've taken whether we dealt with
although today we're a bit hairy I think
it's the strongest stuff with burns the
the most ways we've we've sailed it
today and you know wind wise it was a
four six question for seven times so you
know is it it's challenging for us put
us outside our comfort zone but you know
at least we can we can come away from
this venture knowing that actually we
can we can do
out there and you know any problems that
we do encounter we can solve with let's
see political you can find a hotel yeah
um so yeah catch up with his next
fireman and see where to see where we're
heading next hopefully on a train home I
hope now hopefully the winds are going
to be a lot better but we'll see
