In this episode we visit McNabs Island, then I take some friends out for a sail and a dip in the deep blue! After that we replace our Aging wind instruments ...

tied up on a morning on the other side
of this beach right here it was a good
bushwhacking yeah yeah we were real Boy
Scouts today we walked through like some
really thick nasty really nasty spider
webs I'm sure probably have ticks all
over our junk
[Music]
last time in Saline valley chandra we
left Luneberg then sailed home
completing our 10-day journey down the
south coast of Nova Scotia yeah we grab
yourselves a mooring just on the other
side of this beach here it was a nice
hike over it wasn't too long but I don't
think we're on the proper trail mind you
definitely not no way off the beaten
path but I mean the rewards I mean it's
a really nice spot there's a fantastic
it's fairly the beach is great the
mooring wasn't it was okay there was a
lot of big wakes a lot of big shipping
containers going by and yeah a little
noisy rustle yeah it was a hell of a
windy day yesterday - oh man the sail in
here was not fun we wanted we wanted to
record it but we literally couldn't even
get the camera out it was so squirrely
and windy in there like out in the
harbor yesterday so sorry with that guys
you missed it but he was probably
freaked yeah yeah that's for sure yeah
so we're here
yep now there's something you don't see
every day
pace
we got guests
and we are sailing outside Halifax once
again a beautiful day today we got the
fishing rod out we got sails up but we
also have the motor running because
there's not a lot of wind right here so
we're trying to get out there to the
mouth of the harbour where the wind is
higher and we're gonna try and get some
motion and maybe catch some fish another
day on the high seas
[Music]
captain dan crew
[Music]
so we got jumping in the water at sea
here we're not a tanker it's not that
cold oh that's good
all right go for it Man Overboard you
notice he started to drift away hey hey
what do you think
nice hey guys so I'm going to be heading
up the mast tonight before it gets too
dark out it's a little cool today it's
only about 17 degrees right now and it's
gonna be like 15 degrees Celsius by the
time we get up there but so I'm bundling
up a little but yeah I'm going up to the
top I'm gonna have one of my friends
help me crank me up there and I've got
to have a look at how the Windex goes on
and replace it the wind instruments for
my wind direction and wind speed it's
kind of wobbly so I have to have a look
at that and see if I can fix it as well
so wish me luck
so for going up the mast what we've got
here on board is a bosun's chair this
bonus chair came with the boat when I
bought it and it's in great shape it's a
decent bosun's chair it has pockets to
put your tools and stuff so I'll be
using that is my main ascension harness
I've also got a climbing harness that
you would use for you know rock climbing
or rappelling that kind of stuff and so
I ordered one of these online and this
is a pretty heavy-duty one and it's more
for me just as a backup I'll be
ascending with the bonus chair but this
is sort of like if something goes wrong
this will hold me really well and I've
also got in a sender that's what this is
called but I'm just using one as a way
to hold me on one of the halyards in
case something goes wrong and I slip
this will catch me and how this works is
there's a little catch here with some
teeth so it'll slide up the halyard but
not back down unless you pull this
trigger which will release
these teeth and then it'll slide down
the hill here so so how this works is
you ascend on one halyard and then you
slide this up the other halyard as you
go and it gives you this extra measure
of safety
hey guys so I'm just up here on top of
the mast right now at the very top
here's why my the wind ain't broke off
yeah so I'm fixing that I'm also fixing
my digital wind vane here and it's
pretty amazing up here I've never been
up here before
and here's the boat and that's how high
up I am
it's crazy high up here and kind of
spooky but yeah I'm gonna get my work
done and get down yeah if you look you
can see that my wind vane that's where
it was attached and that's just what
come apart or something so that's where
I gotta have a look at that oh my god if
the smallest wick just hit the boat and
I'm feeling it like it's
oh my god this is nuts all right
gonna get some work done so we recently
purchased some new wind instruments for
the boat the old ones were the PNG
hercules system from like 1980 something
and they desperately needed to be
changed some of our dials in the cockpit
we're starting to fade and we couldn't
read them and it was getting annoying so
it was time I'm going to go up on deck
and cut some holes and get them
installed and we're gonna have some new
wind instruments here we go
[Music]
all right so that's it holes are cut and
it's all cleaned up I fled all these
little holes here so that I don't get
gel coat cracks what I might do is once
I've got the instruments put on I might
put epoxy from the other side and just
fill those holes as precaution you know
just to keep the exist so here's the
other ones these ones here actually
there's no panel going here so I'm going
to be treating that and epoxy and gel
coat
[Music]
hey guys I'm just up here on top of the
mast again I am fixing the wind vane the
last time I came up I just took a look
at the wind vane to figure out what to
do but now I've had a chance to come up
here fix it this is a digital weather
vane and it was spinning around so the
little wheely here would go on the top
and anyways not good so I land it with a
piece of poly pipe here whatever and a
couple clamps so it won't spin around so
we'll get accurate weather readings on
our new digital readouts down then the
cockpit so now I'm just installing the
new Windex and here's the new Windex so
it's just hanging there I got all my
tools in a bag here every tool this time
is tied to a string so I don't lose it
everything's tied to a string this
camera is tied to a string and so you
know I don't want anything falling you
know you learned the first time you go
up things are slippery you want to hang
on so so yeah I'm about to put the new
Windex Illin so it's a pretty good sunny
day to do this last time it was getting
dark and it was cold not cool so it's a
little cold today up here but it's not
really a cold day but way up here it's
cool anyway yeah so just we're done all
right and the new Windex is installed so
as you can see I've got my new
instruments installed here this is my
wind speed in wind direction over on
this side and then I put on this
Raymarine multi unit here because I
wanted something to give me my speed and
my depth and then I've got these holes
that I filled in they're not pretty
looking but I couldn't color match the
gel coat so I'll probably do that at a
later date but you know I just wanted
the hole sealed for now but that's up
