long winter still got a lot more to go
back home yeah votes still under plastic
and back in Halifax it's snowing today
probably frozen in taking a little break
getting some Sun in yeah we'll be back
there in a couple days we got a big
announcement to make
we're planning on sailing to the Bahamas
next winter that's right we're gonna
spend possibly up to six months in the
Bahamas and avoid the Canadian winter so
all of you guys who've been watching and
telling us to get the hell down there
we're listening yeah listen to you guys
we're hearing your calls and we're gonna
try to make it out there that's right I
mean there's a lot of things can go
wrong we're gonna try our best I mean
you know we got some things to change
and fix on the boat and get ready and we
have to find people to go with and make
sure that you know everything's safe so
you know there are some things could
happen and in miking it might not happen
last winter there wasn't much of a
window for many sailors to head out no
so we're hoping that this winter we will
get that window and we will get down
there and yeah make it there safely yeah
exactly yeah so yeah fingers crossed
stay tuned really great stuff coming up
so before we go to the Bahamas we have a
lot of maintenance to do so this is what
you got to look forward to in some of
the upcoming videos we have we're going
to be reading a port light we have to
rebuild our anchor win list because you
know it's been kind of rusty and it
worked okay last summer but you know it
really needs to be rebuilt to rely on it
for you know what we plan on doing here
we have to remove our mast in order to
get at our keel boat washers plus it's a
good idea to remove our mast anyway
because we've never had it removed and
we want to see like you know how the
rigging is but the keel boat washers
that that's holding our keel on they're
wasting away and I just I want to
replace them with stainless steel that's
a big job so we'll show you that and we
have to haul out and we have to remove
the rudder we got to completely rebuild
the rudder we didn't show you guys this
last year but the rudder is actually wet
yeah we ended up having to let it sit
there and drain for a few weeks and even
then it seemed like there was still a
bit of water trying to get out of there
yeah so we're gonna have to fix that one
up before we head out the danger is if
the metal inside the rudder broths or
rusts away the rudder could fall right
off the boat and we're gonna cruise for
six months we want to make sure our
rudder is solid we got to do planning we
have to do provisioning and all kinds of
things I'm sure we don't even know that
we have to do you head push it's a big
trip so wish us luck
keep it accident all right so we're back
in Halifax and the first thing on the
list is to rebid the starboard side port
light first I just want to apologize for
the noise that's the bubble maker here
at the marina and when that's running
like it keeps the water from freezing
you know and it's all good but it's loud
today I'm taking a look at one of our
port lights this is the only leaky port
light we've got and obviously we've been
trying to deal with it by putting tape
around in the tape did work for a while
you know but it's not a permanent fix
and before we go south this is something
that I need to address so far I've
removed the glass
and I've removed all the bolts so now
I'm at the point where I'm going to
remove these plates and will rebut it
and put it back in so in order to remove
this first flange on the outside I use
this carpet knife with the blade
extended and then I just ran it along
the edge like this just careful not to
mess up your gel coat when you do and
eventually it just kind of slid down
into that groove and I was able to cut
all along yeah it's a little tricky down
here at the bottom so you want to get a
lot of blade out but you can do it get
this flange off it's pretty dirty here
which means it's been leaking okay so I
was successful in removing all the
caulking around the edge here and I
investigated in here to see if there was
any pore and gay no pore so the window
is all cleaned up and through been in it
now I used this product at Sikaflex to
9/5 UV resistant adhesive and sealant I
put the window in from the back I did a
bead of caulking all around the edge and
then I cleaned it up with a popsicle
stick to give me a nice perfect bead and
then I just bolted it in a couple places
just temporarily to hold it in place
while it dried so I just took this bolt
out already in this bolt and what you do
is you put caulking on this side and
caulking here put it together and make
sure that the screws and where I
countersunk these screw holes has plenty
of caulking in there because that's a
point where it can leak as well Sikaflex
is a little hard to work with you have
to clean up with mineral spirits if you
want to save yourself a lot of work you
can tape around the edge with masking
tape or painters tape and when you're
done just peel away the tape and no mess
it's really important not to tighten the
screws and bolts until the caulking has
dried also the screws should remain
stationary while tightening and only
turn the bolts otherwise you might break
your caulking seal all right that's it
all done now the flange is on it's just
drawing now and should be good to put
the window back in tomorrow thanks for
