In August of 2017 we sold everything and moved aboard Balachandra, a 1986 C&C44 sailboat, then sailed it over 300 nautical miles to Halifax Nova Scotia to spend a cold Canadian winter in the frozen waters of the North Atlantic. Sailing Balachandra is our YouTube sailing vlog inspired by other great channels such as Delos and La Vagabonde, which documents the sailing adventures of myself and my partner Nawal as we navigate the globe. We also dive into lots of DIY boat projects both above and below decks, and share with you all of the pros and cons of living aboard full time. Sailing Balachandra is published weekly so please subscribe so you don't miss out on future videos!

in this episode we hang out in carlisle
bay
then we snorkel the antigua reef we go
hiking in jolly harbor
snorkel a shipwreck in deep bay then set
sail for the island of barbuda
last time on sailing bella chandra we
went hiking in english harbor antigua
then sailed on to carlisle bay where i
demonstrated my anchor
finding looking glass and we discuss how
we control
mold on our sailboat if you're new to
the channel hi i'm noelle and i'm dan
and we're sailing bellatandra we've
sailed all the way from nova scotia
canada
to the caribbean and we're sailing all
around the caribbean now
and if you haven't subscribed to our
channel just go below this video look
for the big red subscribe button and
press that button
[Music]
anyway
carlisle bay has a white sandy beach
where zeus can run
and a dock which is part of a resort
where they allow cruisers to tie up
their dinghy
[Music]
so we just dropped the hook here in
antigua reef if you're sailing the south
coast of antigua between english harbor
on your way to jolly harbor the reef is
just offshore a little ways
and it's kind of like a big horseshoe
shape so you can anchor right in the
middle and there's a kind of a protected
spot with a sandy bottom where you can
drop your hook
and there's supposed to be some good
snorkeling so we're going to go check
that out and
after this we'll probably push on back
on our route to jolly harbor and see
where it takes us
[Music]
so
[Music]
so
[Music]
oh
now that's super weird never seen these
things before
[Music]
so we just dropped anchor here on the
west side of antigua
and a little place called jolly harbor
and here there's like a marina
and some shops and some restaurants and
it's pretty convenient there's a budget
marine
where you can pick up stuff for the boat
and there's a big
grocery store here called the epicurean
which is pretty cool
best place to do your shopping here in
antigua and well it's just in there
right now getting a few things and me
and zeus are just
killing time waiting for her to finish
up there so we went into budget marine
and we're just walking around near the
marina here
this is just a stop for us to get a few
things you know there's
a couple bars and restaurants if you're
into that and you can check them out i
think in a couple days we're going to be
heading up to
barbuda which is sailing north so we're
just waiting for the wind to
have more of a south component in it so
we can move that way
before we go to barbuda we're probably
going to stop around st
john uh here in antigua which is kind of
like the big city and there's a couple
anchorages there that we can grab so
we're gonna go there first just as we
wait for the weather to change
but all in all we're really enjoying our
time here in antigua and it's it's
pretty nice
it's funny a minute ago zeus got away
from me and i couldn't get him back
because he was trying to find a well
i got on the walkie-talkie and i was
calling for noel to come out of the
grocery store and help me find him but
then
i was able to get him back after a few
minutes of looking so
you know crisis averted another really
good reason to have walkie talkies
[Music]
we decided to go for a hike around
pyran's point next to jolly harbor
there are several secluded beaches along
the route and it was very beautiful
[Music]
that same day we sailed to deep bay on
the west coast of antigua
where there is an old shipwreck in the
mouth of the bay i decided to go and
snorkel the wreck
the water was a bit murky but i could
make out parts of the ship
this is the wreck of a 120 year old tall
ship
that sank here in the bay after arriving
from trinidad
most of the ship is still there
including what's left of the mast
which is broken invisible dry at the
[Music]
surface
[Music]
foreign
[Music]
we left brighton early this morning
heading for barbuda
we were anchored in deep bay at the
northwest tip
of antigua and it's really beautiful we
docked a wreck there and
it was just a nice pleasant safe place
to spend the night not a lot of roll
and really good and just beautiful but
to get tip our buddha
we had to leave right away because we
probably need the whole day to get there
we're just passing the tip of the island
now and we can't even see burn bud in
the distance so
we've got a little ways to go but
we should have a downwind sail for most
today right now it's upwind because the
wind is wrapping around the island but
you'll find here in the caribbean that
happens
theoretically when we come around the
other side of the island we should have
a downwind sail based on what i read on
our weather predictions so
you know just behind the beam at least
[Music]
all right so we are just approaching the
cocoa point anchorage in barbuda
it's just behind me here and i can
already see this huge beautiful white
sand beach it's gonna be great
uh the reviews on this place are really
good it says it's the clearest water
outside of the bahamas so i'm excited to
check that out
we were sailing on roughly like four
knots all day
and uh we had maybe eight to ten knots
of wind
and that's it but uh with the full main
up and the full jib
no reefs you know four knots is all you
need going from
antigua to barbuda it's not a huge
distance it's like 20 something nautical
miles so you know take your time and
enjoy it why not
