A Marshallese Celebration and a sad goodbye We sail up and down Ailuk Lagoon to celebrate a special birthday. With a new yacht arriving, we head to the southern part of the atoll and meet up with the crew from SV Manna. While we are there we meet up with Emily and Pumpkin and get invited to celebrate Emilys birthday. We have just enough time to fit some windsurfing in before the party starts. We then see a good weather window for us to start our trip back to Majuro, so after a fond farewell to Emily and Pumpkin we get ready to leave this beautiful atoll. happy friday yes um mana are coming up

from

majoro today and they are bringing all

the boats a few bits and bobs things

like onions and apples and fresh stuff

that we've run out of

and they'll be arriving down in the

village which is about 12 miles from

here

so we are gonna go down to an anchorage

it's about two miles from the village um

and sit there and await their arrival

and then probably just dingy into the

village tomorrow because the

village anchorage is a little bit tight

for anything more than about three votes

and it's a lovely day to be doing it yes

but we're lazy we're just going to put

the head sail out because

we're not any hurry really so we should

have plenty of time

well it's been five up here i think

we'll probably come back up here right

yeah it's beautiful

it's our favorite anchorage so far it's

nice having a little bit more of a wrap

around

being in a bit more of a bay rather than

sort of hanging off the side of a lump

of coral

this morning thank you

and we're going in in the choppy weather

to the village

well we're gonna drive to pumpkin town

yeah right captain run

lean back a little more there ron

anchor

good excellent

we first met emily and pumpkin when we

had arrived in ilook

almost two months earlier they very

kindly laid on some drinky coconuts

and hosted us while we all sat around

for a chat and a good cruiser catch up

with curtis and julie from the yacht

manor

emily gave joe and ange a guided tour of

her kitchen and veggie garden

emily's kitchen out here and you've got

a nice view with your kitchen

oh wow do you

um cook breadfruit smoked breadfruit in

there oh lovely

yeah everything and you've got a lovely

breadfruit tree

and i make prayer here yep

and goes in there and that acts as an

oven

all outside too nice

oh it's quite a good sign where you've

got some healthy looking uh healthy

looking vegetables in there

growing veggies in the soil of the atoll

is a challenge

emily had set up a sheltered growing

area as part of a community outreach

project

run by the wellness centre in measure

this had only been set up for a couple

of months but was already showing great

results

it's very healthy yeah corn look at that

yeah fantastic wow i'm very impressed

it's nice to have some greens it's like

island cabbage

fiji have a similar thing i can't grow

anything

bananas oh yes oh banana palms yeah

so you're very self-sufficient

but emily is just showing us this is a

pandanus

fruit roll-up so they basically they

take the pulp and then they dry it how

long do you dry it for emily maybe one

week

a week in a week then we roll it and

another for a long time and then it's

wrapped like this

and it keeps for ages like this but this

is the actual

breadfruit is a good source of food and

there were a few trees in iloc

so we placed an order with emily and

bought two from her

we also ordered some bananas which

pumpkin very kindly picked for us

wow yeah you gotta you gotta be quick

and move out the way there

that's jolly large your tomato plants

are very impressive

well it is blowing a huli today

we've had squalls uh 25

knot gusts is what we've got at the

moment we're just waiting for some of

that to

settle down uh we're planning on lifting

the anchor heading about

four and a half miles north hopefully

the sun will stay out and the scores

will stay away

and we will have a lovely afternoon

i'll be enjoying the 27 knot gusts this

morning

there's no protection anywhere basically

from

the wind

away

we've got another squall come through

let's go and check it out eh

must be flying at least 25

i think we're knots a bit of water

misery

the following morning dawned with

another beautiful pacific sunrise

conditions were perfect for us to

continue practicing our windsurfing with

the offshore haven pirates

before we got started on our lessons

andrew had a quick shakedown sale with

one of the local outrigger canoes

then it was my turn to see how much i'd

remembered from last week's lessons

it soon became clear that all skill and

ability had left me

so i thought it best left to daniel alex

and joe to show how it should be done

nice day for a sale it's beautiful we're

having a great sun

mommy dodging but other than that it's

truly nice after a lovely few days

relaxing it was time to head back south

to the main village

for a very special celebration

are you baking for a birthday party yes

emily

in the village uh pumpkin's wife has

a birthday today so we are cooking

double trouble crunchy peanut cookies

we're supposed to be going in midday but

it's been changed to five o'clock so

we'll see how we go because there's a

bit of a

system due to coming tonight so yeah

hopefully it's not going to be hosing

down at five o'clock but it could well

be the case yeah it's due to stop

raining this afternoon

perfect the bad weather held off

and as joe was still suffering with a

bad back she stayed on board dt

and i got a lift ashore with andrew and

alex

once we got ashore we left our various

food dishes with emily and exchanged

birthday gifts

we had a welcoming drinking coconut

before taking our seats

at the main table

there was a huge amount of effort that

had gone into the preparation and the

serving of breadfruit soup

coconut rice vegetables local fish and

cake was very much appreciated

we were treated as guests of honor and

served our food in traditional woven

plates

once the meal was over there were many

speeches celebrating emily's special day

it's been a real honor to spend so much

time with you

and for emily for teaching us all her

skills and wisdoms

and the food was delicious yeah thank

you all the ladies here that have helped

and the men helped prepare all the the

foods

the more can and and the fishing and all

the wonderful

food that we've had tonight yes thank

you

the evening was topped off with a

gifting ceremony which involved everyone

presenting their gifts to emily

with as much fun and fanfare as possible

it was a lovely evening and we were

honored to get a great insight into the

traditions of martial's village life

so the weather's good we are leaving

tomorrow

we've got some spare petrol which we are

going to sell to a pumpkin he's very

grateful because they normally pay 8.50

a gallon for it they're getting

cheaper from us which is good after

nearly two months it was time for us to

do our final preparations and set sail

once more for measure

so we transferred our spare petrol and

said a fun farewell to pumpkin and emily

and thank them for a wonderful stay

in their beautiful atoll
