In this episode of Onboard Lifestyle we crack open the engine compartments on our custom catamaran sv basik for the first time in eight years. This is just t...

okay that's it crunch time boat is
getting comfortable so we need to shift
gears you know there's a lot of other
little creature comforts what we want to
do to make this boat finished but we're
running in that time we have 12 months
till we're leaving the dock so we are
going to start concentrating on systems
and life and safety and one of the
systems being the engine we have not
started these engines in eight years
I feel good we're sitting in fresh water
we did a fresh water flush on them and
pickled the engines and pickled the
tanks before we shut them down but now
it's time to get them going when we
built each of these staterooms I had to
gut out the fuel system I had to take
out all the electrical the wire
harnesses engine controls so that is the
first project get these engines going
there is no starting batteries and I
don't even play stupid the starting
battery so I will be cutting access
through the bottoms of each of the
closets and building battery boxes and
having a nice place to put those it's
important to have easy access to those
so I could check and maintain those as
well as the fuel systems so we've got a
lot to do I mean this is one project of
many after I do the engines we're gonna
tackle steering we have hydraulic
steering the rudders aren't even on at
this point we have k-cup rudders and
they've been in storage forever I need
to rebuild those we need to make sure
the dagger boards are functional and
then on to life of safety all in the
next couple of months and I don't want
to drag this to the last minute I want
to make sure that we have some of these
items done months before we leave so I
got a lot to do it's time to get busy

okay first thing I need to do is put an
access plate into the floor of this and
figuring out where it needs to go is
going to be the fun part so I need to
peer through the engine cowling and see
what needs to happen

just a chilly morning
look at these decks pretty cold out this
morning
okay now that I have access cut into the
engine compartment let's take a look at
these projects here's my main access
here built this earlier works pretty
slick okay so let's take a look at this
a nice yam our engine it's only about
500 hours on these but this has been
pickled for eight years just sitting
here I need to do quite a bit to get
this thing up and going well obviously
look at this here's my your they just
kind of sitting here I need to mount up
over here fuel filters I also have my
seawater strainer which will probably
mount back over here because I have
access to that of the hatch here is my
coolant reservoir I'll pry them out that
right up over here I need to get the
batteries in let's see batteries should
go let me close this out now that I have
this nice access
[Music]
I'm gonna build a battery box right
there I think it's a nice big open area
I get to it easy for service so quite a
bit to do to get this one engine going
and the good thing is I have two of
these to do so after I finish this one
I'm off to the other hole I do the same
thing over so it was good practice on
this side I better get going okay now
the fun thing I need to dive down in
here and scrub it all clean cuz I can do
quite a bit of epoxy working here and I
need it spotless so this will be fun
[Music]
okay working on the engine I've applied
an engine cleaner to get all the gunk
off there and here's how it works
ha ha very funny I'm your engine cleaner
your today look and look at shiny gosh
look at dusty everything is I know I
cannot wait to get this thing all
insulated paint water painted insulated
and up and running now running that's
what I'm excited for I know
ok keep at it and you're doing good ok
the next thing I need to do is get all
this engine linkage that has coiled up
alongside the engine here this is all
the linkage here's my transmission and
here's my throttle and then this is the
wire harness it for the engine controls
that go out at the helm all this needs
to lead to the helm so I need to get it
out of the engine compartment here and
to do that I just drilled a big hole all
the way down into the edge of our main
and I'm gonna feed some conduit right
there so that goes right there it comes
out under here
that's the first step okay now I'm gonna
have everything sweep up run along this
wall and at the back of this axis
there's a small it was a small deck
plate I took that out I'm cutting a
larger hole to get all this enough to
get through there we've got quite a bit
different here
I want enough space around it that I can
still have access so I took the deck
plate out and I'm just cutting a big
square hole for now this is in the back
corner of just a crawl space we'll see
how this goes it's cutting pretty easy
so far but we'll keep going
[Music]
okay got my access hole cut now the idea
is to run all the engine controls
through this conduit I'm gonna leave it
open-faced on this wall that I want to
put I gritted out this wall to put these
all down this wall that'll give me
something to zip tie it on and just keep
control as I'm trying to get it through
this crawlspace
so it's weekend and projects and
cleaning day is what we have to do okay
hi what do you do okay I'm gonna help do
some projects I don't know I already
started two loads of laundry and moving
things around so then we have to address
any moisture issues during the
wintertime and Till's working on the
engine and air conditioning on just
working in spacious conditions
trying to get this conduit on the wall
this is for the heating no this is for
engine wire harness and engine controls
okay
keeps it up off the ground yeah I have
to elevate it as I come through this
access hole here there we go okay I'm
backing out oh that looks like you
already built this hatch so this will
give us access in here to the battery
battery and also the sail drives sail
drive maintenance yeah
and I've ripped apart your stateroom
sorry
it's pretty good huh okay not much
longer maybe two weeks okay so here's
where I stand
now I can start shuffling some wires
through there
[Music]
[Music]
[Music]
got it
okay I've tied a messenger unto this
table and that'll help me pull the wire
harness you're on the next
let's go check out see what Lynn's doing
I hear a lot of commotion up here see if
she's up to she's organizing her pantry
look at this it's all done labels you
got everything labeled or anything
labeled everything is organized now I
just got to figure out how to get this
all back in the pantry well I already
did it I did the math it's gonna fit I
know it's hard to believe this is gonna
pay you know but I know it's good you
know better look at this stack it's
bigger than you I know but I gotta
figure out how I'm gonna organize
and remember where everything is okay so
obviously all the stuff that's in the
front I'm going to remember but it's all
the stuff behind the scenes so I'm kind
of thinking I have to do a list on each
shelf what are you doing oh just having
fun this is cool
you did good okay so all this has to go
back in the pantry fits in this little
Locker
I guess hard to believe it fits all well
you guys better get well I'm thinking
I'll do a list of everything on the door
so then because it's three deep and I
don't know how I'm gonna remember it or
actually grab it because it's I can't
reach it that's what it's what I'm for
you could get it yeah but at least you
have the space I know I guess deep
breaths we get lower okay I'm not
complaining
get busy
