In this week's episode of Onboard Lifestyle we remove a two decade old hardtop from our custom catamaran sv basik. This project has been a long time coming a...

okay welcome back to SB basic you can
see a little bit of a grin on my face
today that's because we're taking this
down finally after eight years the hard
top goes away I've kept it on just so
we'd have nice protection for the
cockpit we could use the cockpit in the
Sun and the rain
but it's time it's time
over the years I've cut this out I had
to cut this out right here just so we
could get down the stairs I felt these
used to post straight down to the deck
here and here and again over here and
here but I had to cut those out to do
the deck work this whole thing
has been hanging from the boom
for eight years
this is gonna be fun okay
so taking this down it looks
like it was constructed with drywall
screws I'm not sure that rusted out so
bad this is an FRP panel that looks like
has the texture on one side and it's
been glassed over on the top I mean this
thing is I don't know 20-plus years old
it's been here forever held up pretty
good but it's time to do just take it
apart I think what I'll do is all OH
break all these off first and get the
FRP skin off and then I'll be able to
just cut this all up I'll have to cut it
in place because this is all just welded
in
[Music]
[Music]
[Music]
okay now that all the bracing has been
cut free from this top feels loose I
think it's gonna come right off here
yeah
so what I end up doing is subdividing
this up into small little two-foot by
two-foot chunks so I could get this
hauled away
it sounds better throwing some
gear
let's do this
[Applause]
hey it's coming off just like I thought
it would nice and smooth so far
just keep going
okay I can't lift this anymore because
of this line comes across here right
here and I have to leave this on to
carry this load of this whole structure
so let's cut around it
[Music]
so now that I've cut these free I could
raise this up enough to cut it off
oh it's getting there hey here's a trick
I always do anything you're cutting in
your cockpit always stuff little paper
towels and all your scuppers
just another way to keep the debris out
of the water all my skippers recovered
there's your little tip of the day
my dad has been outside almost all day
how you do it good you ready for lunch
okay I'll be right in
[Applause]
[Music]
okay what's that much okay well this is
definitely changing things quick I mean
look at this I mean we have some light
in the cockpit it's crazy
new views for sure let's go up here and
take a look at what it's looking like
except lis going to change the look of
the boat
ah
you know I was actually surprised how I
thought that FRP panel was light pulling
those little two-foot by two and a half
foot chunks off you're quite heavy so
we're gonna gain a lot of weight by
removing this it's nice it's rays that
water line okay next is this segment
here this will come out in probably four
to six pieces
[Music]
let's take a look at this now
now the fun part I think that's enough
for today
I'll get up tomorrow and start dicing up
this aluminum structure I'll need help
with that Alinsky help me out on that
one
we're getting there
[Music]
okay we're gonna find out my mom's
reaction on this she's coming home from
work hello
oh that looks so weird they look crazy
oh my gosh
this is crazy
wasn't it cool naked yeah I'll be down
tomorrow that's where you're gonna help
okay I think that teal had a very
productive day
here's my sleeping beauty should I be me
anyway to luck
I think he deserves a break
so excited that the hardtop is almost
gone and I can't wait for us to design
and build this new one I don't know if
we're gonna be able to get it done
before summer is over but we got a good
start check this out
Alden an aluminum served its purpose but
it wasn't very attractive or streamlined
so we're gonna have to come up with
something that follows the lines of the
boat and lightweight enough that we're
all happy with it I'm gonna let him
sleep for a little bit more before I
wake him up
you
okay it's early the next morning
look at this do everywhere time to haul
this stuff away before we get started on
the next project which is taking down
the aluminum surprisingly heavy they
must put a lot of glass on here and for
the faring compound save that one for
last
[Music]
okay it's seven o'clock
get these decks dried off
I get to her
good morning guys it's Saturday and it
is a big day today for us
so teal has been really busy throughout
the week and he took down the skin of
our hard top as you can see he's pretty
much naked today is gonna be fun as well
so since I'm here we're gonna be able to
tag-team and cut down this framework all
of this aluminum will be coming down by
the end of today I don't know I feel
really excited and scared at the same
time just because we've had this for so
long but it has to go so the plan is is
we're going to cut all of this down in
small chunks and fit it into and this
bin all of this will go to the recycling
Danny all of this will be going down to
the recycling plant or what is it called
recycling center ok anyways so by
Kiehl's calculation I don't know if you
can see this so by his calculation the
skins
was at a hundred square feet it weighed
after he took everything off 360 pounds
the tubing were estimating based on the
lineal foot is about 145 pounds you
factor in the fiberglass
epoxy fairing compound on top of the
skin and that was about 50 pounds so a
total of roughly five hundred and fifty
five pounds of weight that's a lot in
the back end so I'm sure that what we
come up with and design that will go
with the flow of the boat will be much
lighter and much more streamlined and
kind of go with the design the new
design of our boat so super excited and
I think since teals going lighter then I
can sneak some fun stuff on there too I
mean no
okay
this is gonna be a long day between
adjusting all the lines and making sure
this doesn't fall down on us and
sweeping between every cut because we
don't want the aluminum shards to
scratch up what we have done could be
fun
so we tested a couple different saws on
this and this all's I'll cut it a lot
faster but it through debris into the
air quite a bit a wider range than this
did our little jigsaw actually would
drop the debris straight down so Lynn
can hold a box under it and weave catch
probably 95% of it after each cut though
we stop and sweep the cockpit and make
sure we're not standing on any debris
good thinking are your arms rubber yet
have you only just started
come here come closer to me
look your shoulders are all do I got a
little dandruff there it's like stripper
glitter really I've never seen that
before
pretty good progress so far
as you can see that the bucket is
filling up but we knew that there was
going to be some casualties as we
progress and that's our first one don't
worry
tada we got another blade
let's check this out sewer rat
it's starting to get some daylight too
there
still have this left
what I think plan
tired and grumpy and grumpy and grumpy
okay maybe we break for lunch soon well
let's cut a little bit more than what
break for lunch
it's getting there
it's crazy looking love it alright so
it's time to rerigged the lines as we
get further back into the arch so teal
is gonna move all the lines down so then
we can cut and it doesn't fall back down
on us
[Music]
so we're getting to the tail end of the
cut-offs doing the last rungs as you can
see we don't need any more supports
Till's pulling them off and then we can
cut these last bars down and today's
project is semi complete alright today's
project
today's it never ends on this boat I
swear okay we're trying our best to keep
these little shards under control try to
put drop cloths down but you just slip
on those Glen's doing a good job
containing most of them but
unfortunately I don't know if you could
see this a couple of them got under my
feet and we scratched off the deck a
little but it doesn't really matter
because we have a whole nother coat of
paint going over this whole area couple
coats yeah one more coat and then coat a
non-skid yep
let's take a look at this see where we
stand okay
looking crazy huh pretty naked yeah she
is
okay
just one last push get that little
ladder over there cut off and we'll be
set
[Music]
okay top is off and it is looking clean
look at this just amazing just loving
how open it feels actually it feels
bigger for some reason I don't know why
but getting this top off is the first
step and it's a little bit too much Sun
so we're gonna put some shade up we'll
put some shade up today so the cockpits
not so vulnerable so that's the next
thing to do but I'm just trying to take
all this in right now
what are you doing silly
okay let's get that shade up all right
so it's getting pretty bright outside so
teal and Emma is getting our Sun Shade
up every temporary Sun Shade yeah oh it
is so bright out I can't even imagine
not having something here looks huge
back here that's coming do you need help
okay grab me I'll take this hand me two
more zip ties okay
a little better give us a little
protection
we'll keep the rain off it'll keep the
Sun out
I think my parents did a really good job
taking off the hard top I'm really
excited to see what new ideas they have
in the storage of our places well if you
