Sorry for taking the week off but we had a family tragedy and really needed some time for our family to heal. This week's episode was filmed before and edite...

well we keep plugging along
what is this date for I think it's day 4
look at this every day this gets a
little better sanding and layering just
getting that nice and strong I'm almost
ready for this cassettes to go back in
I've been prepping all of these little
holes and imperfections and making sure
I'm happy with this substrate before we
blast it in permanently well we're
getting close I've been bouncing between
the rudders and the bridge deck for two
reasons
well why there's one in the mornings a
little dewy so I don't want to be
working out here so I work under here
today we actually had a little bit of
marine layer that came in and dumped a
little bit of rain so we were under here
working so weathers one factor but the
other factor is your body
it's impossible to work over your head
for I would guess 80 to 100 hours of
prep it's gonna take for this
it's almost 500 square feet right here
so happen your hand over your head
scraping and sanding all day long it's
rough so I work a couple hours here
everyday a couple hours on the writers
everyday and I'll bounce back and forth
there then I'll pick another project
probably there through holes next and
then bounce back to this bridge decks
gonna take the longest I mean it's a ton
a ton of work and it was expected I knew
it would so let's keep plugging along it
by the time I don't know two weeks from
now three weeks from now when we have
all the other projects done we should
have this bridge deck job right why what
are you every time gone you always oh my
god you left twice I got hurt twice what
are the odds always okay officer
escaping well you take a break I'm good
[Music]
we're getting there
look at this
it seems like you're getting there until
you take a step back and you see
everything that we have to do I know
yeah it looks like we're scraping it
good but there's the detail still you
know blending all this in and filling
all this with a little fearing compound
all the little Nicks and cuts that's
that's gonna be the time and you know
what we're getting now already I mean
we're only a couple days into this okay
let's go some lunch okay I need to do a
little maintenance on these Sanders this
one's running the best right now but my
switch has gone bad this one runs okay
but the switch is good these Ryobi
Sanders I could probably get a thousand
hours use out of these I've tried all
Sanders believe me but the railways I
get the most use out of so I keep them
for parts and just keep using them these
guys are workhorses
it's that easy switch is replaced
I'll probably get other 500 hours use
out of this one
perfect
[Music]
so this bridge decks can take so much
time and we really haven't been tracking
our time cuz we're bouncing from this
project all the other projects just
because it gets too tiring on your
muscles doesn't it so I've marked out a
one square foot and we're gonna time how
long it takes Lin to scrape that one's
her foot and for me to stay in that wind
square foot we're going to multiply that
by how many square feet we have to give
us an idea of how much workload we have
too much okay keep going you're on a
timer
okay this stuff is sticky so you guys
seeing this stuff good I'll go to the
next one
time 8 minutes and almost nine minutes
so so this one relatively smooth about
nine minutes to do one square foot so
we'll get some measurements on this
fridge deck and do a quick calculation
okay 19 feet across times 25 long equals
475 square feet
times 9 minutes equals four thousand two
hundred seventy-five minutes divided by
sixty that's seventy one and a quarter
hours of sanding that's it okay for what
we're probably thirty hours into this
now so we've got a ways to go
it's the overhead work sanding Gloria's
glory and sanding something like that
not so glorious dis sanding huh
tons of it but we're getting there
okay are you telling me to get back to
work no good once you lay down here next
to me the Sun feels amazing in the past
it's too dirty
well good morning well I like this time
of the day
just getting started it'll walk around
the boat kind of look at what happened
yesterday and kind of get a grip for
what needs to happen today the Marine is
real quiet the yards quiet just a nice
time to get a grip here we are
next to a leopard 46 look at this this
boats got about two and a half feet on
us we have a little more beam but the
leopard weighs three times what we weigh
three times it's crazy
[Music]
check this out the yard hauled this out
yesterday
it's a derelict boat that DNR is going
to dismantle today
[Music]
and we have a front row seat it's too
bad I mean in the day this boat was
probably a beautiful boat you know you
look at the details
it's not like it's rotten it just needed
the right owner it's too bad sad in a
way
[Music]
then in a couple hours and excavators
coming in and they're gonna put it in
the dumpster
[Music]
okay
and now here's what's left of her sad to
think about all the memories that
somebody had on that boat all the owners
the places the boat traveled let's take
a look at her now see what's left it's
weird to think about but someday our
boat 50 years 100 years from now who
knows may have the same fate crazy well
it's a rainy miserable day that means
I'm working under the bridge deck here
you can see we've made some more
progress on sanding out the bridge deck
just little by little but I started
mocking up now this bridge deck
stiffener I'm gonna match the profile of
these other two stiffeners for this one
so I'm playing around trying to get this
the right width and I'm gonna extend it
all the way through here which ran right
through scuppered from the cockpit so I
just extended this scupper down we'll
run this through and I'll shave this off
a glass over this that way I don't
eliminate a scupper out of the cockpit
so let's get going on this today
okay a rift up all the material I needed
yesterday for the bridge deck stiffener
I'm using PVC lumber it's light
it does have some flex in it this is not
what's gonna give the bridge deck its
stiffening that's gonna come with the
laminations of glass clock over it and
layering enough to add the stability I'm
looking for but this gives me a nice
substrate with a material that's
lightweight and rot free can you reach
[Music]
on
as I'm working my way down this I'm
making slight adjustments on one side
with my synthetic shims just to make
sure I'm staying exactly the width that
I need
[Music]
well it's just piss down rain all day
yesterday but it wasn't too bad
worked under the bridge deck and look at
this starting to get my deck set around
that bridge deck stiffener it's starting
to take shape
so we'll just keep plugging along at
this hardest part was calculating out
some of these angles to match these
other ones so when you look across here
they all manage now that I've got the
calculations figured out I can put the
bottom cap off it before I do that I'm
gonna epoxy this all into the hole get
this all nice even radius into here we
use thickened epoxy with a colloidal
silica and I'll work this whole thing
this morning before I do that I want to
sketch the surface over all the way down
here I want that epoxy to stick nicely
if it is I'll do both the exterior and
anywhere I can reach in I'll do the
interior as well
what's the caps on then we could layer
glass cloth over this whole thing here's
my one of my cockpit scuppers it's
working nicely okay it's good to work
it's a new day and it looks like the
rain stopped
supposed to get started clearing up and
have four or five days of nice weather
supposed to be perfect we'll get a lot
done this is looking good heels been
working on the third stiffener for the
past couple days sanding this all down
and now we're getting the thick and
epoxy into all the joints molding it so
it's one solid piece
[Music]
this is just the last bit before we put
the cap on right let's see yeah I'll
stand this out we'll put the cap on and
then start laying a glass over it just
making a nice fill it here so the glass
sweeps into the bridge deck nicely okay
and we have a week of dry weather I know
we'll get like that so we'll take
advantage of that and get some glass
work done feeling good about this so far
yeah look down this it's uh it's 25 feet
long so I just did a 50 feet to fill it
right here how was your mixer you did
good
[Applause]
okay that's the last piece been working
my way down right here at the end I've
buttered up with thickened epoxy on the
backsides of these scuffed my PVC first
get one of these in
almost done and last one
the screws are just holding until the
epoxy cures
and there we go
[Music]
[Music]
[Music]
it's one thing about working with this
PVC it when you router it it gets a
little static cling
[Music]
glad that's done okay got my radius on
here I can do it first thing in the
morning I don't want any wind cleanup
was a bear stuff just wants to stick to
everything look at this
got half a bag of these cyst wispy
little fibers I'd like to stick to
everything - oh well go clean down
pretty to start today okay who wants to
start this one of the great things about
being here in the yard right now is that
our friends are all taking turns
bringing mail to us so we got mail
service today we do so I got one more
sander Oh a better hose for the dust
collection system perfect love it open
something
come on moe turn it around they'll see
the back there we go
cool you like it yes Humbert lifestyle
shirt okay I'm gonna open another one

on Monday from and it came from New
Zealand and it's delivered yesterday
love it are the pins in there yeah okay

ordered a couple more yep okay I don't
know what this one is open it up what is
