welcome back to SB basic well we're on
the move again it was really ugly we
stayed an extra day and Friday Harbor
because it was a blow and now that's
over it is perfect for us to head off to
our next destination which is really
tarpor so it's just spread Robert corner
it's just a couple hours away from here
ten and a half miles would be nice to
sail but I know it's coming it's coming
soon don't worry but it is gorgeous here
[Music]
everything seems to be running smoothly
so far the San Juan Island right here
we're actually gonna go all the way up
over the top of San Juan Island and hook
it around onto the west side of the
island
that's where roche harbor is this is
Shaw Island right here and orcas island
is off of the distance over here
we look this way
Lopez's way off the neccesary this area
sis oh it's just amazing I wish we had
much more time here but we're losing our
season fast we got to get get these
sails up and start heading south you
know you see these little storms like
the one we had yesterday they're gonna
start blowing in here with a little more
regularity here soon and I want to make
sure that we miss as many as we can so
unfortunately we don't get to spend a
lot of time in the San Juans here but
we're trying to see a couple of nice
places on our way through just love it
here
absolutely love it
okay we're almost halfway there I've
been just a textbook run for it gonna
watch out for these guys though there's
a ton of fairies
running between the islands and over to
Sydney BC that's that's British Columbia
make two of ravelin over there these
guys travel pretty quick to 16 17 knots
so they come up on you fast you can see
them coming though they have a nap
Washington State DoD has an app where
you could do a vessel watch on all the
fairies and look at the direction
they're traveling how fast they're
traveling and all the details about this
boat it's pretty cool
[Music]
okay we have about an hour on the
engines now and I want to check
that water pump I know it's a new water
pump
just want to make sure everything's
running smooth
the yanmar 3ym 30
just humming along just humming makes me
feel good everything looks great all
three of you jammed up here don't hit
him
so just because we're under away doesn't
mean there is no violin practice
[Music]
beautiful
[Music]
oK we've made our turn
this is pearl Island here and Henry
Allen here will just pass the island and
turn to port and we should be looking
right at roche harbor we're gonna cruise
through there and check out the
anchorage and hopefully there's a spot
for us we could drop the hook and hang
out here for a day or two they just
buzzing through the anchorage here
trying to find a spot looks pretty
crowded but I think I see a spot over
here it's gonna be pretty calm
conditions over the next couple days so
I'm not too worried
Emma you're ready to go to town yeah
let's go
I got big wake big lake thing on
everything
Oh
[Music]
[Music]
it's just a little poppers the mom
forgot to turn off the anchor alarm that
was so cool to see that little pop come
on I know it wasn't me let's see if he
comes back up let's just hang out here a
second

Roch Harbor is a cute town steeped in
history that was built around this
region's natural lime resource the first
lime kilns were built by the British
under the direction of Lieutenant
Richard Roche by the Royal Marines as a
way of keeping his troops occupied
during the pig war from 1858 to 1872
limestone was quarried and transported
to the kilns where it was burned down
into industrial line which was a major
necessity for the production of steel
plaster cement and paper John asked
McMillan of the Hotel de haro in 1886 to
accommodate visiting customers and
dignitaries they included President
Theodore Roosevelt President William
and John Lee okay the end of the first
day here in roche harbor full have been
here a couple hours we went to shore
kind of got the lay of the land just a
cute little anchorage I mean just
rubbing some great weather for the next
couple days so we'll be here for at
least one or two days before we head off
to the next destination little seal seal
pups all around us they're just kind of
hanging out they're very curious they
poke their heads up out of the water and
check you out here's one right here
right now hey buddy
I'll probably come check us out here in
a minute they just kind of hang out here
they're very young and they're very
curious so I don't know Emma's getting a
kick out of them I know that it's a busy
little Anchorage here a lot of seaplane
activity they've been coming and going
all morning besides that though
beautiful place
[Music]
actually it's pretty interesting
watching these guys land in a tight
anklet
[Music]
boy you sure smell that aircraft fuel
when they take off pretty unique to this
area though pretty damn cool I just
dropped linen Emma off at customs
they're filling out some paperwork to
make it easier for us to get back into
the United States after we hit Canada
I'm gonna go over to the dinghy dock and
meet him over there that's right we're
leaving the country here tomorrow
morning
it's a big step for us kind of exciting
it's not a big trip but it's a big step
[Music]
okay we're all secured go meet up with
the ladies okay here we are
so everything good yeah pretty simple we
just went in there and got our
application for our decals to come back
to the country stamped and they say as
long as we have that with us we can
check in anywhere but you gotta check in
as soon as you come in otherwise it's a
ten thousand dollar fine it's a little
steep okay now that we have all our
paperwork done and we're on shore when
might as well check out a little more
site what do you think yeah let's go
it's gonna be a lot of walking today
[Music]
we're walking out to the mausoleum in
roche harbor and you can see us anchored
out here right out there it's kind of a
nice walk through the forest with
spectacular views all the way he will
tell you're sitting down he will tear
your city down away Lord then we'll cop
my bow and his weapon is his words he
will say you in the town
[Music]
you know he will say you with the time
there will come a ruler whose brow slit
and thorn smeared of the boys I know my
lai lai lai spirit outside the McMillan
family mausoleum was built by John s
McMillan in 1930 and completed in 1936
as a memorial to his family and for his
beliefs he incorporates symbols for
masonry the Bible the Sigma Chi
fraternity and his love for family hey
we're getting close
you liked it I think well one advantage
to walking through the forest and not
taking the path is we gonna forage for
chanterelles look at this look at this
beauty
[Music]
look at that beautiful I'm so thirsty
thank goodness there was a reindeer beer
can nearby to quench my thirst look how
old that is look at this it has a pop
top so cool see you know Washington
it was really fun going through the
forest and seeing the mausoleum it was
really cool but it's starting to rain so
we got to go back to the boat
that walk was so much fun and after we
found those chanterelles immediately my
mind was on dinner
this was got to be Emma's first time
having chantrelle so I wanted to make
sure that it was a highlight and it was
also our last night at brooch Harbor so
it was perfect
Shan Charles are actually indigenous to
the Pacific Northwest but it's not very
easy to find so when you do find it jump
on it dinner was so good I am actually
still thinking about it and good morning
Roach Harbor well we have been on the
hook here two days and both nights were
just calm and wonderful
a little foggy this morning as soon as
this fog burns off
we'll pull anchor and head into Canada
about a 15 miles away
we'll be going into Sydney we'll wait a
couple hours this fog to clear up a
little bit feels like the sun's gonna
burn it off pretty fast just give us
enough time to have breakfast and do
some studies with Emma every day is a
school day for her and we'll take
advantage of a nice calm place views not
too bad either
[Music]
okay so we just raised the anchor and it
is time to head to our next destination
and was all set and it's gorgeous the
decks are clear we're on the move
[Music]
[Music]
this place is really cool but I can't
wait to go to Canada Wow
[Music]
well it's a good day to get out of roche
harbor looks like just a steady stream
of boats going in there right now
weekend's coming up
conditions could not be better out here
[Music]
just nice and flat a little bit of a
freeze sun's coming out and we only have
about ten miles to go I think this is
awesome Emma's at the he'll cross to the
Canadian border you know what that means
got to put up my quarantine flag we were
able to see this guy coming for about a
mile coming up quick this is the Sydney
to Friday Harbor ferry hard to believe
that big giant box travels so fast so
we're trying to get rid of all our fresh
produce or most of it before we get into
Canada
so Linda's made guacamole what do you
think thumbs up
[Music]
okay we're less than a mile out we'll be
tying up to the custom stock for
clearance shortly okay we just landed it
the custom stock we've called for
someone to come down and clear our
vessel so as soon as that happens we'll
put up our Kenyan flag and go find a
nice Anchorage for the name
we're in Siem Harbor right now looks
pretty tight out here okay we're about
done there isn't a customs agent here
lenz checking in over the phone giving
them all our information and she should
have a clearance number soon
[Music]
but clear okay okay we're just leaving
costumes and
I don't know half a mile away as an
anchorage called Roberts Bay I think
we'll drop the hook there tonight well
this is our home for tonight checked in
earlier at CM Harbor and just hooked it
around the corner here to Robert's Bay
it's uh just a quiet little anchorage
only a couple boats just a handful so
three of us in here tonight but this
will do nicely we're anchored in a kind
of a sandy muddy bottom it's about 15
feet of depth so we're not going
anywhere we'll get a good night's rest
and head up over the top of the
peninsula tomorrow meanwhile it's dinner
time just kind of unwind relax and get
set for tomorrow
the fog has lifted so we pulled up anger
and we are heading out of Robert's Bay
we're gonna be going over sanic sanic
Peninsula sanic sanic Peninsula this
morning it was such a calm and peaceful
night we really liked it
[Music]
[Music]
boy they're not shy
he just came out of here and went from
zero to 15 knots instantly
overdoing well we're already only
underway for less than 45 minutes and
we're already almost to the northern tip
of the peninsula we going down the
backside south on the peninsula Oh about
six seven miles
[Music]
that's what we're gonna camp out for a
week or two we got a lot of projects
coming up and it's a good place for us
to get it done there's a lot of marine
stores here a lot of supplies and we
could really get this boat to where it
needs to be before we head down the
coast and we want to do all that the
next week and a half exciting stuff okay
just beautiful up here just beautiful
[Music]
Suns coming out we're just passing salt
spring island around this point and
start heading south
you have to shed this jacket soon that's
getting nice fast
[Music]
Emma's over here
drawing
[Music]
snapping at the air because you think
there's a fear of fly that's swirling
around
[Music]
so we're just now pulling into coles bay
and we're going to actually grab a
mooring ball to go visit some of our
friends that we met years ago on to mine
and teals first trip down to Mexico it's
just really neat those boating community
how you establish these friendships and
they kind of become lifelong friends
so just a beautiful little secluded area
and obviously I'm on puppy watch right
now just really nice okay we grabbed our
our mooring ball here it's high tide
right now I've snup it up pretty tight
because look at this not much room here
I'm not really feeling real comfortable
about this mooring situation these
mooring balls are only 50 feet apart and
we take up most of that so we're gonna
leave one person on the boat at all
times
I'm gonna run Emma to shore so she could
play with her friends but for now we
just keep an eye on this guy
I don't feel real comfortable here
actually the winds supposed to clock
around out of this direction later today
so we'll be trailing off in this
direction I'll feel much better at that
point but we'll go say hi to our friends
hang out here for maybe one night we'll
see just don't feel real comfortable
with it but that's all we could do so
teal is taking Emma to shore to go hang
out with some kids I'm gonna be hanging
out here cuz we're a little close to
that boat and we just kind of figured
out just kind of keep a closer eye on
the boat before we feel confident to let
it go unattended
[Music]
