On this week's episode of Onboard Lifestyle we explore La Push as we wait for log debris to clear out of the area. We have a great time and make lots of new ...

okay here comes that next weather system
I know whether it's a big part of our
life right now this time of year in the
Pacific Northwest especially on the
Pacific coast you could have these
pop-up fast I mean look at last night
sorry
not last night night before we were in
just dead calm conditions hope to and
just the sea state was flat now the
winds building flowing 25 gusting into
the 30s supposed to keep building to 35
and gusting into the 40s and 50s later
today I'm looking out here
sipping ocean is starting to look a
little angry
that's how we're here
[Music]
this should go on for about two days and
then start laying down by about day
three or four the sea states gonna be
calm enough that we'll try to make our
next jump
[Music]
but we're just playing in my ear right
now weathers definitely a factor
[Music]
so it looks like we're gonna be stuck
here until this Gale passes and also
getting all those logs to kind of drift
on passes so we can safely go down to
Westport as we were coming in we noticed
some of the beaches were really pretty
and so are the rock formations so we're
gonna get cleaned up do some chores and
check out what this town has to offer
[Music]
[Music]
so this is the harbour entrance to the
Quileute River that little entrance we
came in yesterday morning winds picking
up a bit so let's get a little blustery
out here there's three main river
systems coming off the Olympic Mountains
that are just dumping these logs out
here
the Quileute is has actually three
tributaries that goes into it and these
massive logs from the Olympics come
rushing down here I mean look at these
suckers they are just huge
[Music]
we saw a few of these out there
yesterday or day before yesterday
[Music]
eventually they all wash up on the beach
just as far as you can see just these I
mean they have to be 500 year old trees
out here just impressive anyway the
girls are having fun climbing around on
this driftwood this driftwoods 20 feet
tall
[Music]
[Music]
couple of these logs are just massive I
mean just massive here's one that's very
similar to the one that hit us it had a
root ball on it just like this
relatively new but about 40 feet long
this looks identical to the one that we
had to get out from underneath our boat
the other night you know it's we were
lucky it wasn't one of these that would
have been catastrophic
[Music]
it looks like the winds are continuing
to increase its supposed to get a little
blustery this afternoon it's gonna be
rated it's not raining now boy it is
cool for damn ago she's crazy
okay we're heading up to the marina
office to do a little internet this is a
we have zero cellular in this town zero
oh you may notice we've moved slipped
also I'll show you why in a minute but
with no cellular god who the track I
think it's time for a booster we're do
something but even when we're standing
next to the building we barely get a
service it's crazy so we have zero
cellular but we do get a Wi-Fi signal
from the office up here so we could do
Wi-Fi calling check our emails and just
get a little bit of a work done because
mi a because we went silent and here's
why we moved the boat look at this we're
having a - tide over the next two or
three days we were in this slip over
here and I was checking the depth and it
was getting dangerously low I mean it
was probably a foot below our rudders so
we moved over to a deeper slip yeah I
feel much more comfortable so let's go
check our emails
[Music]
okay this is how you go grocery shopping
when you're in the push you get up early
you jump on the bus to a neighboring
town and you pick up your groceries
because there is no grocery store in the
place and it is freezing yeah it's a
below freezing today actually Dex Dex
have a little bit of ice on them this
morning it has to be below freezing yeah
okay let's make that track
okay so here we are the big city of
forks Washington
amicus the ketchup on her cellular and
Internet here because we actually have
reception but we're gonna be here who
had a couple hours before the bus heads
back so we're gonna walk around town a
little bit and then do some grocery
shopping and get back on the bus towards
low push the cloud transit system
connects all of the northern towns of
the Olympic Peninsula they have a fleet
of modern buses with friendly drivers
round-trip for the three of us was about
five dollars and most of the time we had
the entire bus to ourselves
plus the views were spectacular we were
talking to a local fisherman named Daryl
and we were getting to talk about fish
and I mentioned that I like steelhead
and look what he got us I can really
concentrate on my schoolwork right now
because I can smell my can't wait
here you go time to dig in thank you
okay it's been a couple days now we've
been here at the Quileute tribal marina
and everybody's been super friendly
everywhere on the peninsula so far we've
just run into just wonderful people
the weather's calm down winds are died
down the seas are flattening out and you
know we probably could have left this
morning but we didn't for a reason it's
a special day for Emma it's Halloween
and she wanted to dress up and you know
spend some time with other kids so we're
gonna stick around today she's getting
ready now on the boat and we'll go
trick-or-treating and they have a little
Halloween festival here in town in La
Push and we'll let her have her fun time
tonight we'll head out first thing in
the morning
[Music]
we're just heading out of the push this
morning and we're gonna try to make it
in daylight to great Harbor I don't
think that's gonna happen
but we're hoping we have to plan the tie
it's really carefully around here
because there is a bar in every port
that we go into along this coast so
fingers crossed we're gonna have a good
passage
[Music]
okay this is the bar right now
everything's looking real good depth is
good Coast Guard's out here waiting for
us to cross this little bar this little
bar
well it's narrow the dangerous bar
there's the Coast Guard
Jeremy information of Broadcasters here
in the Culebra partitions your channel
to view out though
all five senses no one bigger now
what a backdrop this is really
[Music]
well conditions look pretty good out
here we've got these long rollers about
12 seconds apart but they're only about
five feet tall so it's gonna be real
comfortable
you know it's tough this stretch of the
coast because there isn't any
Anchorage's and sometimes you have to
make an overnight passage and with all
this log debris on that last leg it was
it was not a good situation but we're
gonna try to make a run for grades
Harbor make it all in one day and
hopefully we get maintain some speed and
get in there before a nightfall that way
we can keep an eye open for all this log
debris but everything looks good so far
[Music]
okay we've been at it for about almost
four and a half hours now we passed
destruction Ireland we out for the
distance there and um I could actually
get a visual on Cape Elizabeth over here
pretty flat and calm out here got a nice
rolling swell
they're saying it's a four foot swell at
a five peak so that's perfect and
they're about 12 seconds apart you could
barely feel them you know the log debris
out here is so much better so much
better than it was a few days ago I'm
glad we went into the bush and waited
that out I've only seen one log off in
the distance I've seen a little bit of a
smaller debris in the water but nothing
alarming at all nothing like it was a
few days ago gosh
well we're motoring now the winds have
been out of the south for the first half
of the day they're gonna start clocking
around they'll be out of the East soon
east northeast and then out of the north
then we'll be able to sail the second
half of the day pick up our speed we
have to average six knots to make this
in daylight hours to make it from La
Push to Westport and we're slightly
under it now we're probably averaging
about 5.6 5.7 but
[Music]
with the wind on her back we should pick
up speed here shortly just dogs in a
little bit of kelp here but besides that
the sun's out this chilly
but we're making way our time and
Lapidus turned out to be really fun the
quillion
tribe made us feel welcome and were
really helpful I will never forget when
they invited us to their weekly tribal
drug gathering they played traditional
drums sang and danced and told stories
of the rich traditions of family and
community
this event draws members of the small
village and is a way to pass down the
history to the next generation out of
respect to the tribe we did not film the
ceremony the Quileute hunted sea mammals
and fished from their ocean-going cedar
canoes fishing is still their main
source of income today I am so glad we
got to experience this tradition and
will always have great memories I will
push and the Kalia tribe
[Music]
okay we just keep plugging along here
it's a pretty nice day I'm catching all
these nice smells from Lin she's down in
the galley preparing dinner I don't know
what it is yet but it smells delicious
let's go take a look we got going down
there
well it's called seize right now so I'm
gonna make clam chowder with fresh bread
[Music]
well we got a little wind not much just
enough that we could drop one engine and
actually increase our speed but we're
looking like we're gonna make it in
daylight hours it is hopeful been a
textbook run just been easy wish we had
a little more wind but that's the name
of the game this time of year blends at
the helm and she'll be in pretty soon so
it looks like my wish came true we're
making it in before the Sun sets I'm so
really really happy about that
everybody pre made dinner we're having
clam chowder and fresh-baked bread
tonight so as soon as we pull in I can
reheat that up and we can have a nice
dinner and have a nice good sleep
I gotta say this is the perfect sale
after what happened the previous one you
know things happen we know that and but
it's okay you know it's okay because you
just learn from it and you move on and
you enjoy the scenery because this is
spectacular
[Music]
[Music]
okay we've made it in in daylight hours
we timed our entry over the bar just
perfectly we were coming in as the tide
was flooding and just about slack
so we rode it in made good time had a
big day but we're now in Westport it's a
beautiful night winds were in our favor
the second half of the day and we had a
nice run it was it was a nice nice day
okay we're all tied up in a safe place
tonight
no Anchorage is around here so we're at
the transient dock we're on float six
tonight we had an option of going down
to float 21 we came in the entrance and
they have a dredge in here right now so
we came over here and it looks like it's
gonna be a neat town to explore it looks
like a ton of commercial fishing boats
and a cute little seaside town so we'll
check that out tomorrow
