On this week's episode of Onboard Lifestyle we focus on projects that we have to complete rather than projects we want to complete before we head south towards Mexico. We are currently in a area that is rich in WWII history so Emma gets us off the boat for a much needed field trip. Come back next week to see what we are up to...see you then! JOIN OUR CREW! previously on onboard lifestyle
teal ties up a few loose ends on our
hard top just in time for me to surprise
him with another fun project
i was so excited about the cockpit
lighting install that i made the crew
one of their favorites for dinner
this project made me so happy and i
think it turned out amazing
take two
so what's the plan teal what's the plan
for this week
i see some seriousness going on there
well it's because
we're shifting gears now okay what does
that mean
it means no more doing all the fun stuff
that we
want to get done we have to do all the
stuff that has to get done
because we're coming down to the end of
emma's ortho treatments right i know we
only have a couple weeks left and she's
done
her teeth are looking amazing okay emma
let's see those chompers
which means that while we're here in
richmond
it's nice being close to a place where
we have stores
we have an address here we could get our
amazon
[Music]
it's so cool while we're here i can't
reach that
just climb up climb up order anything
from amazon
and we happen to have a pickup
stop or a hub why they do that
we need to get everything in here to do
the next four
projects i've got it narrowed down these
are the things that have to get done
or they're going to be difficult to do
later on okay what is it
solar panels we're putting on with all
this new hardtop
we knew this was going to happen we're
putting on another 600 watts of solar up
there
which means we have to have a frame that
holds these things so we need to get on
finding a welder because i have struck
out
i've been asking around calling around i
could find
25 welders within five miles of us but i
can't find one that does aluminum
so i'm asking for help please jump on
that one
okay i will do that that's not a problem
i'm sure
that there's somebody around here that
can do it yeah and there's two projects
there's the solar panel frame
and then the post for our helm top helm
top's been built
i haven't put it up because we don't
have posts so
those two things have to happen before
we leave here
another project is the stack pack and
lazy jack we can't get our main back up
without putting the lazy jacks
up okay i can do that
well you know what i haven't done it
because i didn't have a sewing machine
that was
heavy duty enough are you intimidated
i'm a little intimidated not so much
now that i'm like reading up on it and
stuff and looking around
um but we did have a friend that lent me
her sale right so i know now i can i
don't have anything in my back picking
that thing up
i don't have an excuse anymore not to do
it so i will work on that
this week as well as finding you a
welder welder first please we
we have to get this done because if it's
going to take a week or two to make
these
it's just pushing up against deadlines i
can do two things at the same time
okay if you could work on that today i'm
gonna start prepping this top
for solar there's quite a bit i need to
do
so i'll begin diving into that uh the
biggest thing we need to do
is lithium batteries there's a lot of
components we need to get in
uh get the lithium batteries here get
all the
oh geez just everything i mean my mind
is numb thinking about what has to
happen to this
oh it's plug and play
[Laughter]
of course it is it'll be a piece of cake
it'll be easy no it will be easy
but with the new lithium batteries and
the solar
we button all this up we're going to be
comfortable heading south so those are
the ones i really want to do
so okay finish up your car
i made you an extra i gave you an extra
shot of espresso
i know it tastes wonderful i'm just
hoping that this kind of
rubs you up a little bit and get you
going on those projects
okay hit the phones find me a welder
five minutes five minutes please
okay i spent the last 15 minutes making
phone calls i think i got some good
leads
and i'm sure one of them will call me
back if not a few
but in the meantime i'm gonna kind of
prep this whole area so i can get
started on the stack pack
because it's crazy every day the
seagulls come in and just
feast on all of these muscles and just
leave their
the remnants of their party here so it's
just too bad we're never
invited to these parties
you want some help with that no i got it
okay
actually help your mom oh my goodness
you want some help with that need help
i can help you i am the strong one after
all right yes that's right
actually no but just follow me okay grab
one of your dad's katelyn okay
can i use this one okay
i am by no means an expert at this
actually i've never done this before
teal and i have walked around marinas
and looked at
other stack packs we've seen some online
everybody has a different method of
putting it up
so this is kind of a hybrid of
wine and teals uh what we want for our
stack pack and
i hope that it's gonna work because it's
gonna be a very expensive mistake if it
doesn't turn out
so i have emma now as my assistant and
she's gonna help me measure it out
okay
okay i played it all out girls are
working on the stack pack on the dock
i'm gonna start working on the solar
panel wire loop i need to get it through
the hard top underneath of the solar
panel so before the panels go in
i have to cut an access hole and epoxy
in
a little riser i don't want water ever
running down there
so i'll get going on that looks like
they're doing pretty good the wind's
picking up so
we'll see how long they last out there
that's where it'll drill through i've
laid it out
the idea is to keep this loom underneath
the panels
so it'll be protected from uv it'll come
down here
follow the support post and i'm going to
dive it into the structure here
i went through and filled all these
holes with aluma weld
it's all fired off i'll sand this smooth
i want to keep as much moisture out of
this as possible
with the curtain on the outside here
this loom will be
totally protected
there we go like clockwork
okay do a little bit of uh hand sanding
here
some epoxy can bite
take it a boxy
holy cow
i packed it in inserted the tube
i'm going to put this on and keep it
from moving i want it to stay in the
plane
down here while i work on it on the top
side
that'll keep it from moving
okay it's been a busy day you guys got a
call back from
a welder that says that he's willing to
look at our project so
we we hop back in and we're heading out
there so
fingers crossed it's been what do you
want to say deal it's been
it's been difficult it's been odd it's
been really odd
you would think such an industrial area
like this would have tons of welders and
there is i mean we've probably called 20
welders we've talked to
multiple people who have friends who are
welders and nobody wants to weld
aluminum
no they say they can't do it so um this
guy is
he came recommended by another welder
that does more um more industrious
and larger projects but he said this guy
is the guy to go to so
so we're gonna drop off our little
project and see if he'll uh
yeah bite on it it'll be good fingers
crossed
so this is round two we just we're just
about to get back to
the boat and we get a call from the
welder so he gave us a quote and he
wants his deposit
now so they can get started well that's
comforting isn't it i mean it's
comforting but
it has to be done but hey it's exhausted
i'm smiling because at least this guy
called back
i know it's been it's been difficult to
get anybody to call back
i don't know if it's a trend or not in
california but
never had such a hard time finding or
getting someone to call back
regarding some work but
it's we're getting closer one more
project down
fred the welder is coming through red
with a z
spreads welding
[Music]
[Music]
well it's the next morning the epoxy is
fired off
i had a bit of a tough time up there it
was uh
pretty windy last night
so i was just hanging on and getting the
epoxy down
but it all turned out really nice planed
out perfectly on the bottom
and i got a nice nice clean radius
around the riser
it's a little difficult cutting this
inside the boat because
we only have a small board but you know
you gotta work with what you have right
oh no
so we'll just do it in segments and
emma's really good about helping me just
hang on to it to make sure that it
doesn't
waver hey compass
compass is just happy that we're in here
and not outside
yeah something satisfying about this
little hot knife yeah how's it going
good it's gone i think it's one more
segment
yeah they're really small that looks
nice and straight
oh kind of hey
don't look
last part
and done that's it that's all we need to
do
is the best part in here and i'll roll
it up oh no
no this does not look as glamorous as it
looks but
we had to move it in here because the
wind is
so bad out there uh that we just have to
make do
and it's more than a little frustrating
to say the least because
this is 15 and a half feet long
and i'm trying to work with
this really unforgiving material
but we're almost done i think i'm up to
the halfway point of this
at this rate and this is the last piece
for the second
uh side of this backpack after that then
i'm gonna put the zipper in and
then we'll just slap it in
but emma's a good helper thank you
[Music]
when we first got here i'm i saw that
there was a rosie the riveter museum
and not many people know this but i am a
big history buff so that museum would
have been really cool for me
but it was closed down due to the
lockdown
and everything so it recently opened
back up and so i'm really excited and
we're going there right now

is
december 1941 a sudden attack on distant
u.s naval base transformed america
overnight into the home front
everything changed especially the
swelling industrial workforce
it included more minorities in
particular african americans and women
embodied by rosie the riveter richmond
california typified wartime boom towns
across the country that endured deep and
rapid change as migrants sought work
and defense industries
