We leave the Crinan Canal and go to Largs to see Saturn Sails to get a small repair done before it becomes a big repair, but on the way we dodge storms, see ...

if your dream is to go cruising type
ebonite then the one thing that you
really need to have to do is to just
enjoy the same thing just enjoy the
silence the quietness and not have to
have 900 no no things that men at once
to be excited just to just sail
[Music]
well they're salty laughs she has
completed her challenge which was to go
through the grinning canal and I tell
you now she was absolutely filthy
Beverly took all day mush didn't take
all day
she took a couple of hours cleaning her
on the outside because she was just
covered in lots and lots of slime and
green when I was Beverly was most
insistent 45 degrees so Beverly wanted
at 45 degrees so that she could control
about forward and backwards as well as
side to side if you have it further back
where the canal people tend to put it
yeah they tend to put it much further
back you've got a lot of forward and
backward motion but you've got very
little side-to-side motion and to
control it side to side you have to put
a lot of strain on the ropes and on the
cleats and on the cleats so that's why
Beverly wanted it 45 degrees so one of
the things that we Beverly and I found
really handy was our walkie talkies
which we got for less than 20 quid from
Amazon but it means that we can chattel
these quite gaily to each other about
what we're doing with regard to ropes
etc without clogging up marine radio so
they're quite useful the absolute must
and I've lost it already cuz I didn't
know you were going to use it I was
gonna use it on the tow
the other essential thing that we found
really useful is tea tree oil because as
you go across the critic canal the midis
are absolutely horrendous
but midges and noseeums I think is what
the Americans call them really can't
stand the smell of tea tree oil so
basically we just sort of like dabbed
that on our clothes and it really kept
the midges away that's really good idea
well this is the last lock or is the
first lock if you're coming if you're
going no but this is the last lock for
us after the lock you have a bridge in
the gap navigate which does get moved
for you and they're salty less over
there she looks good as she is looking
really looking forward to going to sea
because the sea beckons
[Music]
[Music]
so then gain it where are we and why
well we're in luck
Tarbert one of the many doctor bats that
there are in around Scotland but this is
locked harbour in Upper Loch Fyne luer
lock finance lower lock fine lower lock
fine but anyway yeah we were doing a
beautiful little sail gorgeous sail uh
looking really forward to a good long
sail but then the wind just came from
nowhere I just went ridiculous we've got
into a force 8 and because we could run
for cover
we did do and what was our moment of
glory can you recall I think our moment
of glory was having a reef in the
journey and sold in six knots oh yeah
[Music]
Bev and I decided that we were going to
have a little treat today I know what
salty water I've no idea oh is that why
we're having a treat that we're on back
on salty water but I have to say these
steaks from the local butchers in tartar
one of the timers one of the many
targets this is the lower Loch Fyne
Talbot the looker laughs dinner oh my
goodness what is go Jess I'm the more
observant among you wouldn't notice
people come back to the old fashioned
method
[Music]
well we just left Tarbert where we ran
to in a stormy weather which is over
there and Tarbert lovely little marina
we really enjoyed it
everything all closed in a nice it's a
much better day today and we're able to
get seals up quite quickly and we're
making a very very pleasant 5 knots down
loch fyne
so boat is just sitting nicely and we're
just going
[Music]
after a really nice sale and we did a
cracking sale a rough when we sailed
back tide which is about six hours and
we're now in logs which we came to when
we were on our boat search the port we
looked up still here for sale okay so so
one of the boats we looked at with is
still here I'm one of the ones that was
for sale and truing is here and I -
slips up from us but yeah so we're
hearing logs and the main reason come
here is I have got a tiny tiny rip in my
genoa it is about two inches long I
reckon but we're going to get it fixed I
have to say I feel like we've getting a
quite a good deal and getting it fixed
for 20 quid plus VAT so as far as I'm
concerned that's a heck of a good price
so basically two thousand quids worth of
sail 20 quids worth or repair yes
Brina it's not very it's not very big
rip I admit that oh let's do it now
well it isn't very big rip we dropped
our Genoa and used to halyard to lift it
into a trolley and wheeled it and our
spur sales up to Saturn sales so Beverly
and I have just had our sales our spare
sales checked out and what did you find
about our spare sales relatively poor
condition and serviceable sales so
usable as a as a spare as opposed to an
everyday sale useful to get yourself out
of a pickle or something tears the
material quality maybe wasn't the best
but that kind of worked as a spare sale
as opposed to what we would discuss in
the mainsail and we were you were
basically just saying that maybe ditch
that one so what's the reasoning for
that then I think the but the most was
probably the poorest to condition out
the two of them generally what you find
is if if you tear a sail the worst piece
happens it's normally in the worst of
conditions obviously changing a mane so
or doing any work like that on a rig is
not something you're going to undertake
in in bad heavy weather conditions so
worst case now if you do tear a main
sort it usually gets dropped onto the
boom tied up and wait till we get to a
poor somewhere and then you can actually
do something about it whereas if you
have a spare head so that is something
that could be changed relatively easily
and it's probably more useful less risk
involved in using that as a spare sail
than there is the amount of work
involved in changing it and then some
over especially yourselves that you have
a full band mates which just adds to the
Bolton
yeah so basically it means that for us
that we're gonna ditch our spare
mainsail and give ourselves a bit more
space fit more space in the lockers yeah
well that sounds like good advice so if
you need spares just go for a spare head
sail absolutely you just want to keep it
there yeah right and that sounds like
good advice to me okay thank you all
right thanks to fast service from Saturn
sales we hoisted our genoa back onto the
further that night and left for our next
port a big thumbs-up from us for the
guys from Saturn thanks fellas

[Applause]
