In this episode, we sail from atlantic. City to the entrance of the great dismal swamp, canal in the icw
So it'll be close?
It's gonna, be a whole lot nicer we get to turn around down the coast. right now it sucks
Once we turn downwind and got the sails up chris decided to show us some new, steering techniques
They, don't teach this at ASA... for good reason
Late afternoon first day
gone something like 50 60 miles already
humming along six and a half seven a half knots...not too bad
Babies hanging hanging tough. really, likes to nap. got any thoughts, about our first, day? No..
It was harder and easier than I expected. And we're just getting started
this is gonna be
An all day and all night and all day, again, before we're in norfolk
day two on the water and
not a lot of sailing going on
Wind sort of died on us in the early morning
Guys, and it's a pretty darn nice then it's hot
We look to be about two hours out
Tonight, we're spending the night in Vinings marina
Very nice marina in norfolk
and
as we cleaned out the coffeepot, we discovered
Phosphorescent algae in the water
In person the algae, was incredibly bright unfortunately, we couldn't. Fully, capture it with our cameras
There's water music soon-to-be layla snuggled into her berth in norfolk
Pretty cool, spread right here
Justin a little battleship in the background
Rested pretty good, this guy slept good
Since we wouldn't be back in a marina for another couple of days, we decided to give layla a scrub down
Turns out, we wouldn't need, one
I don't think the heavy stuff is gonna come down for quite some time now. A Drip right here
So, we went through, some rain, but no no worries
This, guy's being a, little crazy right now. He's learned, some sailing terms mostly winch
Followed by, give me some rum
Just slowly cruising through the chesapeake about to pass some
Numerous military vessels and stuff like, that probably, some more rain, up there but, we're just
Once again motor sailing mainsail up nice light wind behind us
You know nothing crazy
Our plan is to get to the dismal swamp today, we may not get in the lock
which would be fine we'll just spend the night there at the entrance and
Be one of the first ones in the morning for a nice
early, morning cool, hopefully cruise, down the dismal swamp i
Think, this is all considered hampton roads right
Tons and tons of military ships
We make sure those are really clean
Said those kids are up to no good it was really funny, but you kinda had to be there so what do we draw? 4.5
most of the dismal swamp is...6 feet
Could make it hard to anchor we don't have anywhere to anchor
Careful of that right behind you, okay
Do the locks tomorrow early early early
That's good
We're in the dismal swamp
Just kind of chillin
Havin, some beverages
watching the
sunset peacefully
Right there is the lock entrance
Yeah, so we'll be up?
Ready, for the first entrance at 8:30 tomorrow. Morning
To, enter the dismal swamp, canal
Very peaceful here
But i mean how. The how, did the the canal get started
Drain one swamp because you really wanted a different swamp yeah
You, buy, any of this
Was he president
Tell me more!
in
1784 the dismal swamp canal company was created
And the work, was started in seventeen 93
Who, were the principals, if i remember correctly it was george washington abraham lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt
Yeah, can you imagine like cutting a
Freaking, canal through this stuff i mean i didn't even look
Like this it was just like a swamp rivers is far more interested in eating his hat
The key to a good time on a sailboat is to plan a 600 mile voyage with a teething baby
really nice out though
