help on sunday
in this video we help our friends on
sailing sunday
to fix their leaking water pump it's a
yanmar it's one of the mr
4j series engines and this one's a 75
turbo
but there are other engines with the
same block and similar configuration so
if you've got yamaha
it might be worth you watching this
video it's awkward when you're trying to
hold yourself up
um
[Laughter]
we can move those impeller blades yeah
there you go perfect how easy is that
yeah that's actually easier
[Music]
trying to cook a full breakfast through
the
litter box of the front door and the
problem is i got it i got it you got it
so what we've got is we've got his raw
water pump which is here
but it's directly in front of the engine
mounting
and to get these four bolts out here if
you can see all four of them
you need to actually remove the engine
mounted
so we've got to take two engine mounting
bolts off of there
and then behind there's four bolts that
weld it to the engine
then we're gonna prop the engine up and
slide it out
so that we can get the raw water pump
off to change the
lip seals well actually it's a ceramic
seal on this pump
but uh it's actually a better design
than the volvo one
but that's because it's
if you stick your light on that again
yeah there you go so
now we can get this one out and this one
and this one over the back and the one
that's up
back there easily and effortlessly look
at that
ryan's hard work paid off
[Laughter]
oh that's really bright yeah i got these
guys
you can do two things with these engine
mounts right
one is support the engine the ones that
hit the australians over the head
[Laughter]
so i was just saying that ant that
there's
oil on this because um actually you're
telling me why
so yeah we don't have to drain the oil
because the oil sits at the bottom of
the sump
which is right in there but obviously
there's excess oil just around on parts
still
so i was always worried pulling this out
the oil would just drain out no
but it's the oil sitting in the sun yeah
anyway
if i zoom in with this cam right here
what you've got
is there's a there's an oil seal in here
on the back
and that stops the oil from the engine
going that way into the pump
and then on the front the same as our
volvo video you've then got a seal on
the
back of the pump which stops the water
going back into the engine
and that gap is there as a telltale
and you can see you've had water running
out yeah and that's
that's how you know it's either the oil
seal oil comes out
or the water seal on this side and on
this one it's a ceramic one
but it's the same print exactly the same
principles the volvo pump
it's actually just a better design
because it's got this ceramic seal in
the front
all right so now we'll pull this apart
and see what's inside pull it apart and
put it back together again and put it
back on again yeah the fun part see i
thought the hard part would be
pulling it apart and putting everything
back on precisely but the hard part is
actually
putting all this back on precisely
you've got to strip half
the engine down to to get at it but
it's a good design so i showed ryan how
to strip down the pump
and then overnight he uh he cleaned it
all up and we returned the following day
i can show you this tripping down if you
really want to see it
just ask in the comments so you've got
to push
this lip seal into that
seat in there with the spring
facing inwards towards the engine yeah
just a little bit of oil on there
so uh just stick your finger in your
earbud
a little bit on the bronze is it this
bit yeah it's that bottom
uh oil doesn't matter where it goes on
the other side no
so the object what you're trying to do
is you've got to push this
into there with the spring facing up and
push it evenly
without pushing the center oh okay right
you don't want to push that
because that's the actual lip seal part
of it okay
it's got oil on that that's all right
it's gonna have some more on there in a
minute so anything i'll do is drop it in
just drop it in nice and gently
get it roughly in the position and push
on the outside of the
of the seal oh yeah and it should just
press in there nice and gently
all right that's as far as i can give
that my fingernails buddy
so now what you want to do is just push
that on top of there
just push it and push it in
evenly so now we know we're pushing on
the outside edge of that
seal yeah yeah
that bob's your uncle dog hair
yeah so the engine's just gonna have to
make do a dog
here like britney's cooking
just not just quite home is it sure
what's really cool about this
is that um because we do more vlogging
type videos
yeah a lot of guys that watch this will
find it interesting and then people that
want to know will go straight to you to
watch it and
do it because i can't really talk about
this kind of stuff because i don't know
you know ah but you will know when
you've done won't you
that's that's the beauty of having
someone
sort of give you a hand is that you you
learn how to do it
right so that's now sat back in there
and you can see it's even round
around the lip and even the other side
yeah
so can you see it yeah that looks good
yeah yeah look at that
just
it's nice and even in there there's no
picture in the back no
no the picture cuts out on that one
after
save the battery i think that should do
it too so
what you've now got to do is we've got a
let's get our manual oh that's all the
other clips for because it's two
yeah clips in here yeah well that's we
don't need that but we don't need that
because we
one hole to bearing in position front
bearing in position
so that part number 14 which is that lip
seal goes in there first
yeah and then the next piece to go in is
the bearing
then the circlip then the second bearing
and then the big circle you don't put it
on here and then put that in no
because this bearing's being held
against that
edge there with the with the back
circlip but you can't see the circle
it's in there yeah we haven't disturbed
it so that'll be fine
so the next thing you want to do is
you've got to put this
into there without damaging that that
lip seal
yeah okay right so what you want to do
is
see that stops the oil from coming out
that stops the oil that stops the oil
from coming out of the engine
now the trick here is to make sure
there's no dog hairs
yeah yeah which there isn't you've got
to drop that down there
very very gently and not let these
damage the lip seal the lip seals
are really delicate so nice and straight
square
there'll be a little bit of resistance
as it goes on oh there's gonna be
heaps of resistance
that's just the oh the the lip seal just
opening out
no that's that's gonna be so tight you
want do you want there
oh sorry yeah have a look it's going to
be
really resistance i'm thinking like okay
so now that's in there square
what you've done is you've just opened
the lip seal out so the lip seal is
actually grabbing that shaft
and what we now want to do
is we've got a just gently tap this
bearing into there until it sits down
and then the circlip goes where's your
rubber mallet
that was there it is there's one i
prepared earlier
no no no just just just just gently as
flat as you can
grease on the bearings yeah i did oh
yeah yeah it's still pretty tight though
yeah it's a bit on an angle actually
okay
just knock it slightly
you got it
here well you just what i did was i just
pulled that straight in there
yeah and that's why we put that oil on
the shaft so that as it goes down it's
putting oil onto the
onto that lip seal not damaging it now
in here
there's a little circlip that goes in
there and we've got a new one
that'll just help it seat in
again dog here sorry
can i is that paper towel oh you've got
it there i've got it yeah
i think i was going to say i'll bring it
over there and drop that in there
and what you want to do is
using the circlip pliers is you can just
close that down
these are not particularly good set but
now
push that down yeah like that and then
let it open up
okay so now what you need to do
is to make sure that certain it's in
there
is just push it around a little bit
because you want to make sure that it's
in there and if that push
there we go that's that's in there
so that's that's now retaining that
bearing
like out here i wonder if it was um well
i i think what's happened to you at some
point
it's been run dry and ceramic seals
have have to have water around them
they they generate a lot of heat if they
haven't got water on them so i wonder if
someone
has started it and not turned the raw
water on or it's drained out
or um the strainer boxes got full at
some time
and stopped water going through because
ceramic seals normally
last they last forever that can't be
right
yeah well where's that bigger seal gonna
go
it doesn't show it doesn't show
it shows that piece there all as one and
it
it isn't actually one piece is it no
is that if you hold that pump that's
that is part 13
this has that
on the back there so so the water
is not supposed to go past this bit yeah
and that just sits in there we want
this to go on that way yeah oh wait you
can
see that um through there anyway yeah
it goes right down oh that goes right
down here yeah oh so that's what's been
moved
there we go how can i push that
well it's deep
but then when you when you put this on
you're going to push it down yeah that
this is the one that we've actually got
to push in like a bearing again on the
lip seal
this is the ceramic so that
won't go any further until that
is pushed in now here's the difficult
part
we've got to push that in without
damaging that ceramic
into that yeah yeah that's right we use
this uh
well that won't that won't push the seal
in you want
something like a very long socket
yeah because they're spark plugs yeah so
i've got one for the
um i say i've got one a big long one
for my uh
doing my pleats
yeah we've got it mate
so i've taken the these are spark plug
spanners yeah
yeah so they hold the spark plug when
you take them out and what we've done
is taken the rubber out so it's then
deep enough
to push down that nice and evenly
on there
and that's you in that's it
oh yeah yeah you can see that seal so
the ceramic
inside the pump stays still yeah this
one
with the spring pre-loads that
ceramic to the right tension yeah so
the next bit is your just quickly we
meant to put oil
in all that no what the water will
lubricate yeah it's water lubricating
you don't want to put oil on a ceramic
because you'll clog all the surfaces of
it yeah
that's that's one that is gonna that is
gonna be tricky to get that circlip on
but
yeah it's tricky to get it out remember
yeah well the groove is in the shaft
and it's behind the pump so you've got
you've got to
push the circlip down
against the spring until it's hold that
washer is holding that back
so you've got the thickness and of the
washer and the spring to compress
that's well that's the side that's up
because you can see that where the seal
clip was sitting nuts so that's where
the impeller goes
so this is impeller side and that's bare
inside
should i see if i can get that off there
no well you can try
it's only a bit of oxidization
so that is the um that's
that has a circlip side so then that
drops down
over the top of that just to protect it
to protect it and then
we've got to get that circlip which is
the new one
over there while holding that down
against the spring
so it is kind of like a which one do we
need which is the new one
they're both new ones for the bearing
and the other ones for this
right what where's the one that came out
oh yeah of course that one
okay so what we've got to do now is
we've got to put this circlip on
over there you push the back of the
circle and now
what we want to do is try and push oh
yeah in the circle
just push in exactly what i did with the
i'll just put the rubbers back in this
yeah
the exact exact way i just did with the
washer okay
let's just check we're there
we're going to hold this circlip and
spin it yeah i just want to make sure
that circlip really is
home but can you can you see down there
see you're looking for the little ridge
that the circuit
is sitting into yeah yeah i can't see it
i can't see the little ridge
yeah oh no there we go that's it yeah
there it is i just heard it
yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
i didn't i'll edit that bit out too
[Laughter]
now i can see now you can see the edge
of the little
yeah yeah that where the circuit sits
and it's
in there so it wasn't it wasn't quite
home
yeah it is easy like this is
a lot for me to get my mind because i'm
not a i'm not mechanically minded i'm
more like building minded
yeah but like it's it's simple for me to
do now
but it's knowing those little techniques
not like yeah like when i'm like how are
we gonna do that here
oh that was easy how the we're
gonna do this oh that was easy how the
hell we're gonna do this oh yeah that's
easy
like you know what i mean and now i like
that clip when we put it in now
like i probably would have been like
yeah that's it and kept going
yeah but but then the impeller wouldn't
have fit and then i would have realized
i've taken all that part again and
so it's good to like yeah well i
i wasn't happy that it clipped in like
that and then when i turned it i
couldn't
see the little ridge and now you can see
the river you see it and you heard it
snap in
yeah so it looked a bit high too didn't
it yeah
a little bit well you've got that plate
to go on so that circle it has to be
behind
the back of the pump goes around
that way yeah you see it and now oh yeah
you see the washer what yeah
so now that can rotate the back plate
stays still and the circlip isn't going
to hit that
yeah yeah but water can still get behind
there to lubricate it
okay so that's that bit um
we're on the home street um we've got
well we've got to put that in but first
we need to talk this up
remember how tight yes yes yes so
we'll just drop that plate out for the
moment
so now you want to put some torx seal on
there
lock tight oh yeah thread locker i think
if you stretch over there we've just got
it
there you go
it's okay so we're just tightening up
we're just gonna tighten it up
for now because
once we put the impeller in support and
he's going to have a lot of editing on
this video
so if you hold that on there
oh this is 14 mil yeah
hold it right then because i need to get
the torque
that's it oh so it doesn't click or
anything it just gives you the right
torque
you're on a gauge right it's a good
feeling when you get all that together
right
so there you go mate there's your metal
plate
yeah and that wants to go with the warm
side
down that's right
okay now what have we got all that
what a job and i see the polishing job
on that bronze as well
oh will that sit on top of there
like that there we go so
the next thing is you've got to get that
in there
yeah yeah so there's a couple of ways
you can do it
some people say put a tie wrap around
there
yeah and crush them in now
you can do that but what i find is if
you just put a little bit
of fairy liquid on these the fairy
liquid won't hurt the ceramic
yeah yeah because it's water soluble
and it won't damage these but if you use
oil
you'll damage the ceramic yeah and your
depth and these don't
impellers don't like oil so if i show
you how to do this one you'll know how
to do
the next one yeah because i've got a bit
of a technique
okay yeah because i just sit there
halfway with holding a view of my board
shorts hammering in
however i get it in i've got glycerin as
well i have an impeller
grease i got impeller grease you don't
need
all we're doing is just lubing that up
yeah so
when we push it in we can move those
impeller blades yeah
there you go perfect how easy is that
yeah that's actually easier than that uh
that's using the
the glycerin grease whatever although
although in my defense
in my defense i'm sitting there like
well yeah right trying to do it
right so that's good very the very last
thing we're going to do is clean out
that
so the other thing i'm going to do is
where's that and that's actually in
better now
um usually when i put these in it's kind
of still sitting down a couple of like
not a couple of like a millimeter
yeah and i'm just but obviously we've
cleaned the whole pump out now it's
sitting there a bit more flush
yeah this i remember this this had to go
right on the inside of that yeah
imagine hey so but i mean
now you know how it works and how it
goes yeah go together
you're gonna be at a sky you know the
next guy that comes along and goes oh
no me pump on there you go
[Laughter]
i just got finished washing up first
yeah yeah he's uh
putting stuff away as we're making more
of a mess so just
on the top surfaces just just a
tiny little bit that's it that's fine
yeah so
do this one here first don't take it
right home
and then do this one so that you're
pulling it down evenly on that o-ring
yeah
and then go this one
and i haven't pushed them right home you
wanna
ten in it
there you go i think that's the uh
yeah i bet the m10 is missing
there you go so that one next
you literally just just pinch them
that's it
now these don't need to be tight because
the o-ring is under compression so all
you're doing is just
pushing the face plate against the
o-ring
so they'd be tight enough not to come
out but not so tight you strip them off
yeah yeah there one rebuilt pump
all done
that's cool
oh it's not dirty
now we've got to do is whisk that back
on put the
put the uh
pipes back on yeah and then put the
engine mounting back in position
yep then put the heat exchanger back in
yeah
yeah so i gotta um do all that
i'll do all that today am i getting your
hand actually put the engine mount back
on maybe
well that's why i bought the ratchet and
spans over because they're a lot easier
to
to use on the working spaces
what's that we're gonna put that back
yeah no i'll put it back on but i'll do
all the heating either side
that's it now this one here
just again to pull down on that gasket
evenly
now throw the engine mount back on
kind of one the four bolts we snap onto
the um
the main block here and
then we've kept these ones up tight as
we mentioned earlier
and then we'll put it wherever it ends
up with a script back down hopefully
engine hasn't moved at all
so i've got poor hat in there working
hard that's the face of her
stressed out man no it's kidding he's
actually really coming is exactly what
he's doing
he's getting the one at the back that i
can't get to
and then i'll do these other three so
he's doing the top
your top right eight yeah yeah and then
i'll
do the bottom left and then we'll play
around and then we'll do a full tighten
up did you not get that finger tight
the other ones oh no no i didn't no i
didn't get it finger tightened up
right i'm wondering oh sorry yeah i
couldn't
get to it properly that's why i need to
do it
we've got stage in the back there he's
on light duties
holding the light on light duties a
little bit of light work there eh
there you go mate that just wants
pinching up
so you you're just about done then now
mate yeah
yeah i can't find my toothbrush ryan
have you been using my toothbrush
