Progress on the cabin sole and I build a new work bench in preparation for the rudder construction. Thoughts are also turning towards the keel.... This is the story of the building of a Jay Benford designed, 31.8ft, junk schooner-rigged cruising sailboat. The videos are a week-by-week record of the build as it progresses and aim to show as much detail as possible of the various aspects of the build. These videos take a lot of time and effort to make, in what is already a time-intensive project. Your support in watching, subscribing and sharing these videos is very much appreciated. You make a real difference!! hi it's badger i'm tony we're
building a cruising sailboat
and there she is
and we're at a stage in the build now
where things are
always interesting aren't they but we're
about to transition into a new stage of
the build
i'm afraid they've got some builders
next door so you might hear some of
their noise but
um yeah so thinking about planning
organizing organizing the next stage and
that is
some very exciting things we're talking
about keel
we're talking about masts we're talking
about rudder
plus railings and the solar arch
those are the what i see has been the
next stage and they're
we're just starting on those now clearly
got a few bits of finishing off to do
inside and around about but
those are things that are coming up very
exciting
as i've told you before we should
probably be pulling her forwards a bit
no not probably we will be pulling her
forwards a bit
um a few meters forwards and that is
gonna happen very soon now in the next
couple of weeks i suspect
but we've got some other big bits coming
up i should tell you about them
yeah but before we do that a couple of
things
couple of questions from last week and
i'll show you this
pipe threading kit and uh that's one of
the dies from the pipe threading kit
now these cut a bsp a tapered bsp
thread so questions were why was i
turning those teeth around
these dyes are made that this part is
just the guide
the teeth only are that much of the die
and this section is just a guide so it's
designed to go over the pipe
guide it onto there and then cut
thread on the pipe and remember a
tapered thread
that means that the start of it
in there is a bigger diameter than the
end of it here
but you remember last week i was cutting
on a very short piece of brass pipe and
when i screwed it in there it
disappeared completely into the die so
there's no way of holding it
so what i had to do was take the top off
turn the teeth upside down
so that the bigger diameter was on this
side and the smaller diameter in there
and also they're numbered these teeth
one two three four so when you turn them
upside down you have to swap
two of them over to get the order right
but that way i could cut the thread that
way around without the guide section but
i could get on
i could hold that short length of pipe
and cut a thread
so that was why i did that i hope that
answers the question
so this week's mainly been about
continuing with the cabin soul
working on those boards is the next
section of the board
this one's got uh five groups of
violence on
and with these boards the important
thing is to to make sure that the
the the short strips line up a thought
ship
and a parallel midship on the larger
boards it's important that the the
strips are centralized on the center
line i draw a center line up in the
middle of those boards
then just glue them on fill them sand
them back
and varnish them and it's it's a time
consuming business
basically you get one coat of bunch on
per day
and i'm building up seven coats on there
the first coat is thin
50 50 after that there at full strength
seven coats in total but that one's
nearly done
five coats as i say on there two to come
but as i said earlier some big things
being thought about
um two big things in progress i'm
planning the rudder
um i said planning obviously the boat
plans come with a rudder design but
there are
various opinions from other builders of
these boats about changes to that rather
so i'm trying to come up with a you know
a rudder that i think will work for me
it's based on mr benford's design
but takes into account the other
thoughts
and to do that you remember i had this
bench here there was there was a couple
of
may not know but it was a couple of saw
horses ancient sawhorses
they were actually in this house when we
came here
and they didn't they had a slight twist
and they weren't quite in line
and for the rudder it's essential that
it's straight
um so first thing i did was to build
this
table here this bench table whatever
so

um

uh
[Music]
this is based very much on the design
that i saw leo
tully hoe using clearly a much much
smaller version but
built this up so it's nice and inline
level
i had uh just built out a strapwood that
i had laid about
some red red pine that left over from
when i got the
stairs in the house
and some other boards this time really
well it's good stable strong
table workbench and the board as you see
can be laid on or not i may cut a bigger
board
but as you wish so it's quite handy for
working on
and then kerry and i if you walk up here
this may not look very exciting but
this is four sheets of
15 millimeter ply
which is mainly for the rudder mainly
for the rudder
i've got four sheets of 15 millimeter so
it's the start of the rudder one of them
you'll notice is smaller
we cut that down so that it fits in the
base of our little trailer
and the trailer the base is perhaps not
in the best of condition it's still
solid but
i wanted to reinforce it because all
being well
this weekend coming up terry and i are
going to take a drive
to pick up the lead for the kill and
we've got to pick up a tunnel lead
and i wanted the trailer to be up to the
shop so we've cut that one down
it fits perfectly in the trailer and
then later on it'll be also used for the
rudder
and behind me kerry see one more piece
a bit of 12 mil board and this is being
used for
a couple of things cutting the floor the
cabin sole
boards that i wasn't happy with the
layout of it's there and also
i'm going to make the engine room door
panel
hatch out of it so that's there
and being used

so
uh
so
yeah well in the process of advancing
the floorboards
they're coming on very well i think this
board here has just had
one coat of thinned the first coat of
thin
varnish on there these
over this way
are basically finished now so looking
very good i think

my

and the other big news of the week is
i said we're going to take a run it's
actually an international drive up to
people are led up
and yesterday i had my first trainer
virus vaccine my arms a bit sore
and in order to take this international
drive later on kerry and i have got to
go and get
um tests negative tests and we'll see
at the vaccine yesterday we'll see if i
managed to get a negative test
if not we won't be going up to get the
lead this weekend but we'll see how it
goes
that's it for now thanks for watching
see you next time
hopefully with a pile of lead see you
there
and i can now quite categorically tell
you that uh
you cannot get a negative coving test
the day after you wrote your
vaccination not really a surprise in
fact
not within 10 days so the lead picking
up trip we'll have to wait
put it back a couple of weeks and uh oh
we'll get it
thanks for watching give your thumbs up

and see you next time bye
