Well, I had to call it that, didn't I?
The mast is rounded and tapered and generally looking pretty splendid. Time to build another one!
This is the story of the building of a Jay Benford designed, 31.8ft, junk schooner-rigged cruising sailboat. The videos are a week-by-week record of the build as it progresses and aim to show as much detail as possible of the various aspects of the build.
These videos take a lot of time and effort to make, in what is already a time-intensive project. Your support in watching, subscribing and sharing these videos is very much appreciated. You make a real difference!!

hi i'm tony and this is the story of the
0:35
build of this 31 foot 8 inch j benford
0:38
designed cruising sailboat
0:41
from the lofting of the lines to are
0:43
emerging from the boat sheds to receiver
0:45
keel masts and all the other
0:48
paraphernalia that make up a cruising
0:49
vessel
0:51
join us on this adventure as we
0:54
build topacha and hopefully set off to
0:56
test her out as a liveaboard cruising
0:59
vessel

[Music]
1:06
well
1:07
it's been another busy week in the boat
1:09
shed and i'm going to start this week by
1:12
um showing you where we're going to
1:13
finish actually i'm going to grab the
1:15
camera pan over this mast and show you
1:19
where we are
1:20
let's do it
1:23
here we are we've got the
1:25
the mast foot squared up to the right
1:27
dimensions
1:30
reverse taper coming up to the partners
1:32
area
1:34
a little flat section here that's going
1:36
to be the place where the
1:38
wind is going to mount
1:40
and then we're round and tapering
1:44
all the way
1:46
[Applause]
1:48
to the top
1:52
and basically speaking the shaping up is
1:55
finished
1:56
i have ordered a piece of piping for the
2:00
masthead fitting and um i should just
2:03
wait until that arrives should be here
2:05
any day
2:06
just to make sure the top of the mast is
2:08
the right diameter
2:10
but other than that it's ready for
2:11
glassing and i'm very very pleased
2:15
come out well
2:16
for my first ever
2:18
homemade
2:20
mast
2:21
well that's not true first ever big
2:23
homemade must
2:25
please do that
2:28
and as you probably remember last week
2:30
um i started to uh make it octagonal i
2:34
glued up the four pieces into a square
2:37
i'd cut the taper on that and i'd
2:39
started to to cut that into an octagonal
2:42
shape
2:43
and that was largely done with with some
2:45
tools i showed you the three meter long
2:48
straight edge level last time
2:51
which i used to make sure it was running
2:53
nice and true straight along its length
2:56
little sliding bevel set at 45 degrees
2:59
to check
3:00
because octagon octagon corners are 45
3:03
degrees check you've got the corners at
3:04
the right angle
3:06
obviously
3:07
and a pair of calipers and anywhere
3:09
along its length
3:12
obviously all
3:13
six sides all three
3:15
um
3:19
all three distances across the flats
3:22
have to be have to be the same obviously
3:24
and if you know
3:25
you're running true on the straight edge
3:28
you've got your 45 degrees you've got
3:29
the distances right
3:31
and um
3:32
now and again use the tape measure just
3:34
to measure the width of the flats which
3:36
should also be all be the same
3:38
basically keep that within a reasonable
3:40
tolerance and and you've got a true
3:42
octagon
3:43
and that's what happened
3:45
so i ended up with this tapered octagon
3:47
the double taper of course tapering down
3:49
to the mast foot up to the head
3:52
[Applause]
3:53
huh and from there on it was a case of
3:55
of rounding off and that really was
3:57
remarkably easy did it by eye
4:00
it feels pretty good it was pretty good
4:03
you can feel
4:04
how true your round is
4:06
pretty well
4:07
um did it by eye with a planer and then
4:10
belt sander and and the orbital sander
4:12
to finish it off and say
4:15
it's coming out really well i'm pleased
4:36
[Applause]
4:43
[Music]
4:47
[Applause]
5:00
[Applause]
5:01
so
5:13
so
5:33
it's good
5:44
[Applause]
5:50
huh
5:59
[Music]
6:02
[Applause]
6:09
[Music]
6:30
[Music]
6:32
there aren't they
7:15
mars too big what's there
7:22
[Music]
7:25
[Applause]
7:32
that's good
7:35
that's very good
7:42
that really isn't looking bad at all
7:58
zeroes
8:20
there we are it's now a true
8:23
octagon for its whole length
8:27
it's time to start making it round how
8:29
exciting
8:39
[Applause]
8:43
[Music]
8:47
[Applause]
8:58
so
9:15
[Music]
9:37
[Applause]
9:38
[Music]
9:44
so
10:00
well i'm very pleased with that just got
10:02
the bottom to round up and shape
10:05
and the top section
10:08
is done really in terms of shaping's
10:10
done
10:12
marvelous
10:25
okay
10:40
uh
10:53
look at that
11:05
[Applause]
11:14
all right
11:17
[Applause]
11:28
[Music]
11:47
so
12:03
[Applause]
12:06
so
12:17
[Applause]
12:36
[Applause]
13:08
[Music]
13:10
[Applause]
13:41
um
13:43
[Music]
13:56
oh beautiful
13:59
beautiful
14:10
is the leftover part of the partner's
14:12
tube
14:14
positioned at the partner's position
14:17
and here is my round mast all the way
14:20
along
14:21
the sanding planing work finished
14:25
i am very very pleased with that
14:28
very place we've got this flat section
14:30
here
14:31
that the windlass
14:34
will mount to
14:35
everything else rounded off
14:38
i say time for a sand up i think i'm
14:40
gonna have a cup of tea first
14:47
so
15:53
[Applause]
16:05
big i think
16:23
that one
16:37
so
16:43
[Music]
16:53
[Applause]
17:00
up to there
17:04
this one
17:28
[Applause]
17:42
[Applause]
18:04
so
18:27
foreign
18:46
and there we have it that's it for this
18:48
week
18:49
last one mast
18:51
nearly done
18:52
get some glass on that this week i hope
18:55
um a bit low on epoxy but uh
18:58
should be getting to some glass and most
18:59
certainly first piece of stainless steel
19:01
just arrived
19:03
and that's the piece that will be for
19:05
the mounting of the windlass making a
19:07
bracket up to mount that windlass on
19:10
the top mast head fitting piece on its
19:13
way apparently
19:15
so some fabrication to be done there
19:17
that would be exciting looking forward
19:18
to that
19:19
and clearly got a second master start
19:21
gluing up and
19:22
cutting some length scarfing some links
19:24
up on there
19:25
so plenty to do as ever
19:27
[Applause]
19:29
a massive thank you to you as usual for
19:31
watching you know give us all that
19:33

19:41
lovely people who support us on on
19:43
patreon if you feel like supporting the
19:46
project
19:48
all contributions go into the boat build
19:51
keep this thing running on the
19:53
occasional bit of kit
19:55
it's bit hard on cameras this game
19:57
that's for sure i've killed a few
20:00
cameras and epoxified
20:05
they don't like it you know anyhow
20:07
that's it for now have a good see you
20:09
next time bye
20:16
[Music]
20:22
[Applause]
20:24
[Music]
